I recently tried to purchase a walnut-finished '76 335 TV locally.

It went for $3000. but might have brought more on eBay.

That is, until the economy downturn has driven prices

downward.

I borrowed a blonde '79 back in '98. The guy who owned it had been murdered and his wife was peddling off his guitars. I had zero cash so I couldn't jump in on the action. A friend bought the blonde 335 for $500. He didn't need or want it but he got it for swap bait later. I had it in my possession for a few weeks and even though it was impeccable as far as workmanship and all, and of course it was beautiful, it was boring as boring could ever hope to be.

You old Jazzer you!

Sorry I missed thi post, haven't been arounbd much recently.

Buy a blond 335! I have one, much admired by Thermionik but to me she is the Dumb Blonde because I can't do her justice!

Albertjohn has one too although I think his (335) is honey coloured.

With the exception of Wily's L5 which is just the prettiest guitar I have coveted from afar for a long time, the 335 is THE perfect electric to accopany an acoustic!

BTW Wily is about time you posted a pic of that particular guitar porn again!

BUY it now and post the pic!

Even the great masked one pays homage to a 335!

Hey, a chance to justifiably post some pics of my 335 on the acoustic pages!

It's called "Lightburst" and a 2007.

Well Moose, hereabouts the reissue blonde is about £2,250 in Natural. Older Solid-Colours and Bursts are big bucks, late sixties through seventies seem to go from £2,250 to £3,500 - more if really good condition, tagged etc. There was a divine '59 Burst in London a while back for £8,200, but by the same token, a sweet '68 Burst went in Scotland for £1,700 last month. So who knows..... VG say $2k-$3.2k in the USA - so not overly rare by the sound of it.

I sat and played a slew of 335's the other day (thanks Norman.....) and A/B'd them all against the Epi Sheraton he had. A £500 Sheraton was as good as nearly all of them, maybe marginally better than a couple. They ranged from £2k to £24k, and brand new to a '59. About the only one I would have said was noticeably better was the '59, and it was the £24k one - I found out after playing it for about 15 minutes.

My point - it is hard for an average 335 to hold that price in the market place, a £2.5k 335 is NOT 5x better than a £500 Sherry. Even that £24k one was not that much better - I would have said maybe £1k.

So you are paying a lot for the name. But that's just my opinion. eusa_whistle.gif

Thank you for your most appreciated run down-The Early 60's 335's seemingly command a pretty

healthy asking price here akin to what you are finding there. What they actually sell for may be an entirely different matter. As they get younger, late 70's and up ,the price apparently drops pretty fast.

I should have kept my 57 Strat sob sob

Cheers Moose. When I ordered the lightburst I wasn't expecting the flame/figuring it has. I was quite unsure about it at first but I've grown to love it. I haven't seen any others like it. A blond and ginger combo? I dunno, it sounds like a very firey mix. To be treated with great care and kept at arm's length.

Nik's spot on about the Epi hollow bodies. I've played a few Dots and Casinos and loved all of them. Had it not been that I was able to afford my 335 earlier this year, I would certainly have gone for a Casino. They are incredibly good value across the whole range. I've popped over to the Epi forum occasionally and for a small extra cost you can upgrade pickup etc a produce a guitar which is arguable as good as a 335.

Personally I've not played any vintage 335s. My teacher has a Custom Shop 345 and the difference is very noticeable - you don't even have to plug it in. I've heard Larry Carlton say that he knows a good one by just playing it acoustically for a few seconds.

I briefly owned a Epi SST Studio - solid body acoustic. One fantastic guitar (after a pickup replacement). The sustain was unbelievable and a really really great player. Sold it when I got the SWD as I'd bought it for the odd gig I was doing but it became surplus to requirements.

albertjohn - The Epiphone to compare to a 335 is the Sheraton, and it is very diferent to the Casino, and slightly better than the DOTs. And your 335 is a mighty pretty beast but the way, with a beautifully delicate and subtle burst with some purty figuring in the wood too. What are you playing it through - do you ever get the chance to wind up the volume to that point where the loop comes to life. Guitar-lead-amp-speaker-air-guitar, not howling feedback, but alive under your fingers.....

your 335 is a beauty, aj but i was dismayed to see only one sock in the pic. why do you have to tease like that?

seriously, the epi semis are great deals, especially over here. you can get a dot for under $500. and secondly, i also played an sst recently and thought it sounded quite nice and definitely priced to sell - $400. you say you swapped the p/u in yours. what did you change it to?

Hey Cunk old chap! One sock! Didn't JT tell you about my accident? Obviously not..............and I'm sorry that on this occasion I forgot the cross-dressing thing and failed to wear Mrs AJ's slippers.

The replacement pickup on the SST studio was merely a straight replacement as the original wasn't seating properly under the saddle. I did gig it once but only for a couple of songs and really enjoyed playing it. I bought it for a lot less than £200 including an Epi hard case. You can't get too much that's decent for that in UK

Nik - never played a Sheraton but if it's better than a Dot, I love it already. Those semis are so under-rated IMHO. My electric amp is an Epiphone Valve Special 5watt practice amp. I've only gigged the 335 once - that was a couple of weeks ago for one song - Black Magic Woman playing the lead.........badly needs work! I really should play it more but I spend most of my playing time with the SWD and now the Tak.

In all the excitement I can't recall the amp it went through. I found some feedback but not that wonderful controlled type you are referring to. Something else to work on.

funny you should mention cross-dressing (as i whistle "im a lumberjack" to myself....) i digress....

sorry 'bout the foot but such a visible handicap only adds to one's stage mystique!

really though.... there is a 62?ish sorrento for sale here in town for what my ignorant eye sees as an ungodly amount ($2250 - is that alot?). looking closely at it on monday, the thing is mint - all original and no dings or scratches. one thing though - the body was stuffed with paper towels. no one had noticed so i asked the owner if the cleaning supplies were extra. i'm guessing this was a bit of a feedback machine in a live setting. cool box though.
