jannusguy Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 just got done doing my 15th, or so, johnny winter show. this 64 year old guitar slinger blew away the crowd. he sounds better than ever. for years he was in a drug induced haze as a result of having a scum bag manager ( he met an untimely death falling down a flight of stairs, karma?). a caring person got a hold of johnny and rehabilitated him. this angel (paul nelson, a GREAT player in his own right) has resurrected the career of a blues icon. if johnny is coming to your town, go see him. my hair was standing on end. great show!
jefleppard Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 thanks for the heads up. i just read an interview with him and he talks like he has a new lease on life as well.
John Lee Walker Posted November 22, 2008 Posted November 22, 2008 Hey Jannus - your login name just clicked after reading your post, you run sound at Jannus Landing in St Pete? I've played there before, great venue. Does Jack still own the place? Heck, we mighta met before, man! :)
L5Larry Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 About 5 or 6 years ago, a friend of mine (A vintage guitar dealor that sold Johnny both his Firebird AND his Dobro), said if you ever want to see him play again, you better see him this time around. In fact we were already looking for buyers for his guitars. It's really a great story about his comeback. His appearance at the last "Crossroads" festival tells the tale. He looked good, he played good, and he sounded good. Two points I'd like to make here. One, If there is ANYBODY that you admire as a musician, and they're are coming to a town near you, GO SEE THEM. Pay the $35 or $45 or whatever , you are seeing R&R history. Don't think these guys are millionaires and don't need your ticket sales, they're are working stiffs just like us and need the sales (OK except for the Eagles). Two, none of us are getting any younger, and when you have the opportunity to see some of the greats, you should really take advantage of it (at reasonable cost).
Thermionik Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Nice to know JW is still doing it - he was awful rough a while back, and 'binos do have a hard time of things anyway, without the added chemical overloads..... I love the story that he played through a smoking stack in Tracy, California, ignoring road-crew trying to cool it down and just played on for the set, for the fans. And remember - JW sitting down (as he does nowadays for medical reasons) can out-mojo players half his age - so good to know he is back on form, if not on his feet. I just pray the legal crapola left by Ames is fixed the same way. Hey - jannusguy, Jannus Landing, I am presuming to do with the flier Jannus my dad used to talk about (he was an aviation nut - commercial artist who painted 'planes for fun.....)
zeebee Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 Both Winters and Richards should be bestowed "wonders of the world" honours. Glad to hear he can still rock.
jannusguy Posted November 23, 2008 Author Posted November 23, 2008 Hey - jannusguy' date=' Jannus Landing, I am presuming to do with the flier Jannus my dad used to talk about (he was an aviation nut - commercial artist who painted 'planes for fun.....)[/quote'] yes nik, tony jannus was known as the father of commercial flight. he was the first to fly cargo across tampa bay and around fla. the city developed a blighted block in the heart of downtown and named it for him. that was about 28 years ago. i don't think they ever imagined that part of that block would become an outdoor concert venue but that's what it's been continuously since 1984. you can see some pics here: www.jannuslandingconcerts.com.
jefleppard Posted November 23, 2008 Posted November 23, 2008 cool venue, jg. did johnny let you drive the bus? (sorry, no innuendo intended!) i see you did conor oberst this week. what was he like on and off the stage. i've read alot on him lately. his new cd is very good, mature, folk rock, good listening but in interviews he's kinda phony. he's under this mystical spell like he's a medium for the spirit world and he comes off a bit fruity. let me know your thoughts.
