14 or 17 - does it REALLY matter?

I have two Gibsons. The LP has a 17° headstock angle, the SG (from 2007, GGOTW #10) has a 14° headstock angle.

I'm OK with both - but the question I have, is, in your experience, does the extra 3° really matter? Would I have had a better SG if its headstock angle were 17°?

The poll at the moment is running at

0 votes for "17 is really much better"

1 vote for "14 or 17 I don't care"

5 votes for "I would always choose the guitar basedon sound and playing feel"

Please could we have some more opinions?

Many thanks

Your wish is granted. I did try to vote more than once, but it wouldn't let me. Isn't there some exception for us Chicagoans? We are the capitol of vote early, vote often.

We in the UK are at the moment on a roll due to Olympic success

So, at least for the next week

We can say anything we like...and get away with it... [biggrin]

Any discussions regarding head angle should, IMO

Be tempered by casting one's eyes over a typical lute

The question then become more on the lines of 14, 17 or 90º

Yes, I should have thought about that too - there is such a wide variety of peghead pitches out there, so the reason for setting up this thread and poll was to explore whether there was anything other than "historical accuracy" against particular issues of each model from the past?

Which from what I've read and experienced myself, seems to be the case?

Let's look at this from a physics angle... The sharper headstock angle means MORE downward pressure at the nut... keeps the strings dead above the nut. Thats a good thing since the headstock doesn't "Sing"... I had a 12 string (not Gibson) that the strings on the headstock sing.. it stinks.

Some folks adjust the height of the stop bar to change feel and increase pressue on the bridge. This is the same principal.

One of the reasons I like Gibson is because of the angle headstocks, neck angles and higher bridges...
