texastrummer
I still have the plastic pins in my J45 Custom because the guitar sounds so damned good. I was thinking of getting ebony w/abalone. I like the look but don't want to change the tone. I also can't find pins with large dots and making sure they fit the holes in the bridge is a concern as it doesn't seem my pins match the measurements of those listed on sites I've visited. I want them to fit flush against the bridge. I just ordered Bone pines with the dot inlays for my 45 Custom. It is a darn good sounding guitar even with the plastic pins. The reason I chose it as the first to experiment with is it is rosewood and dark. Folks talk about clarity and separation so thought perhaps it might be more stark on this one. Then it remains to be seen whether that is better or not!

jannusguy2
I just put a set of Colosi dyed bone pins on my new 00018. Haven't noticed any sonic improvement but they've made the guitar look that much nicer.

I figure its like picks and strings - a fairly inexpensive and reversible way to experiment with tone. Your experience on your SWD is consistent with inputs from others. Looking forward to seeing what happens!

Stayed with white for the 45 - thought they would look good.
bobouz
I've never thought the pin material should make much difference. Once the ball end is properly locked onto the bridge plate, the pin acts only as a slight retainer. But in the case of my FT45n, absolutely have to stick with plastic pins to maintain harmonic balance with the highly refined plastic bridge! fortyearspickn
I wasn't referring to you. I have no idea what your political proclivities are. You just asked for clarification albeit in a bit of a snarky way but a fair request none the less. Glad you're feeling optimistic. Â Â Sorry JG, this is why I assumed your 'reply' was addressed to someone other than the obvious. More importantly, I have Colossi pins and saddles in both my Gibson. Peace - Out. j45nick
Â Amidst all of this intellectual stimulation, let us not forget the important things in life - do I replace the plastic pins in my JB with bone, or not? Â Â The unambiguous answer to that particular question is a resounding "yes".

I want them to fit flush against the bridge. Â Â I have found small variations in pin sizes in all my Gibsons. Some of that may be wear, other may be legitimate differences. Bob Colosi told me last week that this is fairly common, but despite those slight differences, I am using his size 1T pins in all my pin bridge Gibsons. Â On my L-OO Legend, the pins were a perfect fit. On my old J-45 (new bridge) the pins had to be sanded very lightly to get them to seat properly. On my Fuller's 1943 SJ, they were a drop-in fit, which alarmed me a little, but did not concern Bob, as long as the string ball end was fetching up on the bridgeplate, and not pulling into it. Â If you like black pins, I believe he has buffalo horn pins, which he says do not change tone like bone does, as the horn pins have a density that is more similar to plastic. retrorod
I'll assume this was directed to someone other than Rod and, since I have a banjo and you're fond of quotes, you can write this on the back of your hand: "Some regard private enterprise as if it were a predatory tiger to be shot. Others look upon it as a cow they can milk. Only a handful see it for what it really is - the strong horse that pulls the whole cart." .. and for your other hand: "The whole history of the world is summed up in the fact that, when nations are strong, they are not always just, and when they wish to be just, they are no longer strong." Winston Churchill Some of the most 'Brighest quotes'.....EVER!!!! Boils down to what Americans want..."Just or strong"....'Just' being tugging at the working man,s sleeve...Strong being ,every one has a chance at 'the dream'...OR IF NOT ....tugging at the sleeve of the workingman..... I was doing real good until Government got involved....or was it a pipedream? I think ...the latter

Arguing with you is like playing chess with a pigeon. You shxt all over the board, knock over all the pieces and strut around like you're victorious. Ignorance is bliss, after all.
