nikko18 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 so i was at guitar center lately. it was awesome i played every Gibson they had through a vintage Marshall halfstack. so much fun. but i noticed that they all felt cambered and really light for LPs, my epiphone was heavier then all of them except the vintage LP from the 70s which was nice and heavy and sounded great. so i know that some people like their guitars lighter and im fine with some being lighter but every single one of the new models i played were chambered. whats up with that? i like how they sound better when they are solid. what do you like the sound of better? and what do think about them all being chambered?
modoc_333 Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 the new standards are chambered. if you want one that's not then look at the Traditional, Custom, or Historics.
nikko18 Posted November 24, 2008 Author Posted November 24, 2008 i did look at those. i played all the LPs they had there except the axcess. my epiphone was heavier then all of them except the actual vintage one.

If all the ones you played were chambered, you obviously didn't play any of the guitars doc_333 mentioned. Nikko, this has been discussed time and time again here...why don't you just search through the forum and see what people have already written?

slimjimdom Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 Heavy does not = tone my friend. As R9 said there are many threads about this chambered topic already. I noticed you keep comparing all these guitars you played to your epiphone. Ok your epiphone is heavier - It has also been discussed that higher quality wood is lighter. Does your Epi sound better? Does your Epi feel better or play better? If so then perhaps you should stop playing all the gibsons they have and stick with the Epiphones
Bram Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 You have to pay lots of bucks for a 'true' Les Paul these days. The solid/heavy Les Paul is just history... I'm proud that I own a Les Paul Standard from the 80's; a quality guitar like that would be unaffordable these days. I don't like the idea of a chambered Les Paul as industrial standard. It's cheaper and saves Gibson lots of money. Gibson lacks the craftsmanship, build quality and passion that they had in the old days, period. If you want to taste/feel a little bit of this solid quality you'd probably have to look at SOME of the Custom Shop models; if you have lots of money on your bank account! It's a shame, really.

Tim Plains Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 d*ck... +1 You have to pay lots of bucks for a 'true' Les Paul these days. The solid/heavy Les Paul is just history... Don't ask me how this one got out' date=' but I picked up a 2006 LP Standard and it was a good 13 lbs! I was holding it up by the neck and my arm got tired. Acoustically, it was a nightmare as far as Les Pauls go. That was enough for me to put it down... Gibson lacks the craftsmanship, build quality and passion that they had in the old days, period. If you want to taste/feel a little bit of this solid quality you'd probably have to look at SOME of the Custom Shop models; if you have lots of money on your bank account! It's a shame, really. I wouldn't say Gibson lacks the quality & passion they had in the old days...I'd just say they moved that passion to the Custom Shop. I agree with you that not all CS guitars are phenomenal, but I'd put my R9 up against any Les Paul made in the past 30 years. Cost is well...cost. If you want to buy American muscle you have to pay for it, nothing new there. A Corvette Z06 is in the $90,000 range...so, what's a piddly $3,000 - $5,000 for a guitar?
SRV-Zeppelin Posted November 24, 2008 Posted November 24, 2008 To be honest, I'm surprised they don't have a Gibson Switzerland division.... all the really expensive stuff comes from Switzerland... watches, chocolate, cars, houses... so why not guitars?
