30s Gibson Vintage Guitar

Got this guitar from my grandmother's things just the other day. Rumor has it she played it in her teens and twenties, and that would put it around the 1930s or so. There is no sticker of authenticity on it anywhere, but the "handle" says the word Gibson on it. And the back of the "handle" has the manufacturer's inscription of DG 5271. I was hoping someone could help me identify this guitar. Type, year, original cost, current selling price, etc etc. Any information would be really awesome. Thank you!

Wow, I may be new to this but I'm not retarded.

My family told me it was worth at least $1,700

And I'm seeing my exact model selling on Ebay for $5,000

So yeah, not a chance I'd give you my family heirloom for a measley, cheap $50.

Nice try, though.

I give you 50 and we don't talk about it no more...DEAL!

Think he was just joking. A nice way to say welcome to the forum.

Mmmm, I think that might be a bit optimistic. Keep it an enjoy it. The L-37 is pretty much an entry level Gibson archtop, even in that vintage. Archtops are a bit out of fashion right now, so you need to look at completed sales on ebay if you want to use that as a reference.

The best reference on these lists it as a D- for collector value. They were made from 1935 until about 1941.

It's more valuable as a family heirloom than as something to sell. If I were going to insure it, I would put $2K on it, but you would be unlikely to realize more than half that at auction.
