old mark
I started playing bass in bar bands at age 15 in 1963. I have had several types of basses, and my favorite is one I have now, a 1990's Peavey Foundation 4 string. It's a Mede in USA model, as are all the older Peaveys. It has a great neck, better than my old Fender Telecaster bass, and has really great sounding pickups with a huge variety of sounds. It is easy to play, simple and I found it in a pawnshop..Got it with a hard case for $160. Peavey made a large variety of basses-and guitars- in the US and they are very under rated and cheap, but very well made with features the "big name" guitars do not have. Their old amps are great, too, and I recommend them. They look like this... http://www.myspace.com/tonezone/photos/48295452#%7B%22ImageId%22%3A48295452%7D mark
MrNylon
I use and prefer the D'Addario Bass Strings. My SG Std. is strung with D'Addario ETB92s Nylon Tapewounds. If I didn't use Nylons, I would use D'Addario Flat Bass Strings. A pretty good standard gauge size of bass strings is .45, .65, .85, .105.
