Cruznolfart Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Anybody play one of these yet? I love the look, wonder how it sounds with the maple board.
RichCI Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Hate the look but love the maple fretboards on my Fender guitars. That guitar would definitely be interesting; I think some P90s and some dressing down (get rid of the gold hardware and block inlays) would make it a real killer. A burst finish would help it from looking so washed out too.
Ian Martin Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 People around here HATE that guitar, but I'm pretty sure that would be my Custom of choice if I purchased one. I, too, am curious about the tonal qualities...I would also love to see the maple fretboard offered on other Gibsons. And -1 to gold hardware, it looks so cheap and tacky.
Cruznolfart Posted November 25, 2008 Author Posted November 25, 2008 People around here HATE that guitar' date='[/quote'] A consensus, eh? Interesting. Wonder why that is. but I'm pretty sure that would be my Custom of choice if I purchased one.I' date=' too, am curious about the tonal qualities...[/quote'] Go to the video about halfway down this page. It is a A/B comparison with various other axes. From what I'm able to discern, it performed admirably in every instance. (sorry about that) http://www.myoldguitars.com/wordpress/guitars/2007-gibson-les-paul-custom-the-natural-with-rare-maple-fretboard/ I would also love to see the maple fretboard offered on other Gibsons. I'm guessing you're in a minority on this point. And -1 to gold hardware' date=' it looks so cheap and tacky.[/quote'] I like it on some instruments, not others. Too bad it's not optional on customs.
retrosurfer1959 Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I have not played that Paul but I have a L6-s I bought new in 19778 that hads a maple neck and I love it good feel and it has held up very well over the years.

Ian Martin Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Unless Jimmy Page or Slash played it, people around here seem to be down on anything outside the norm. THANKS for the videos! Great stuff there! One thing I'd like to see different would be the inlays...they need to be darker...it's just a waste when you can't even see them.
tulsaslim Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 Count me in on the 'minority' that would like to see more maple fretboards offered on LPs. Natural is my favorite finish, too.
SRV-Zeppelin Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 And -1 to gold hardware' date=' it looks so cheap and tacky.[/quote'] I would normally agree with you Ian, but I can't get over how gorgeous the Customs look in alpine white... it wouldn't be the same with chrome.
nikko18 Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 i kinda like the look of this guitar, and especially the maple board. i have always wanted to try a LP with a maple board. i dont like the gold hardware either it would look cool with uncovered pickups. it would be cooler if it came with a black to like a regular custom, but it still had the plain back and neck. the maple board would look cool with the black top. then i would like the gold hardware. oh yeah it should have black dot inlays too.
Ian Martin Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I would normally agree with you Ian' date=' [...'] Then I propose a fight to the death!
djroge1 Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I wonder how that maple neck would sound if you split the coils? I think it would sound sweet. I have a natural LP with a maple neck - rosewood fingerboard. the maple neck feels good. I'm in the process of buying gold hardware for mine after 30 years of chrome and cream colors I decided it was time for a change. As for this guitars markers perhaps a golden pearl would have been nice?
Murph Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 I wonder how that maple neck would sound if you split the coils? I think it would sound sweet. Ha. It would sound like a Tele. Only better. I don't like a maple board on a Gibson. Just don't. Murph,
lpdeluxe Posted November 25, 2008 Posted November 25, 2008 That's the one and only LP I'd give up y road warrior Deluxe for. Love that blond-on-blond look. Here's my bass:
jmac Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 after owning a strat-like yamaha with a maple fretboard and my current LP with the standard board, maple feels more smooth and the other wood feels more "matte". i prefer the LP board because it's seems easier for bends and such...but i dig the look of the maple
lowb5str Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I VERY much want to find a store in my city that has one, to play it for "research purposes". Looks-wise, see my .sig.
Thundergod Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I don't like it... I dont like how maple necks look on gibsons... just as I dont like ebony or rosewood necks/fretboards on fenders.
RichCI Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 That's the one and only LP I'd give up y road warrior Deluxe for. Love that blond-on-blond look. Here's my bass: Hey, man! Somebody stole your frets!
Silverbursted Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I don't like it... I dont like how maple necks look on gibsons... just as I dont like ebony or rosewood necks/fretboards on fenders. I agree, although I really enjoy how maple necks feel.
Ian Martin Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I'm going to buy this guitar just to spite the haters. Then I'm gonna get me a Sparkle LP. Then a Reverse V. Then a Geckoburst. And then combine them all for my signature model someday! Woohoo!!!
littlekenny Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 A reverse V with sparkle gecko finish and a maple board?
Ian Martin Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 *shrugs* Sure, there are plenty of gay bars around here to get away with playing it live. ...haha.
stringwinder Posted December 6, 2008 Posted December 6, 2008 I've played the new ones and don't care for them but I have 6 of them from the mid to late 70's and I love them. Not sure if it is due to aged wood or maybe a different build back then. You can find the vintage for around 4k give or take a thousand either side depending on condition.
lowb5str Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 Seriously, has anyone played this year's model?
KingMetalHeart Posted December 11, 2008 Posted December 11, 2008 I'm going to buy this guitar just to spite the haters. Then I'm gonna get me a Sparkle LP. Then a Reverse V. Then a Geckoburst. And then combine them all for my signature model someday! Woohoo!!! LMAO!!
