I can guarantee you 90% of the votes will go to the Les Paul. Honestly, they're both great guitars.

If I were you, I wouldn't base your decision on what most people here vote for.

99 out of 100 guys may prefer Les Pauls, but you may be that 1 that prefers the SG.

play them and see what you like better. the sg is is much easier to get to the higher frets. but les pauls just sound really great, but then again so do sg's . i guess it just comes down to you preference, you need to play both and see what you like better.

+1 on trying them both...when the time is RIGHT.

If you're still a "fairly new player," chances are until you have a little experience with guitars in general you won't be able to appreciate the differences and unique qualities of both the SG and LP (or for that matter, just why a Gibson is superior over lesser brands). They're both AMAZING guitars, but they are different in many ways. It's not as simple as just choosing one over the other...it's not as much of a cosmetic thing as you'd think.

In the meantime, hammer it out on what you got and save those pennies. DON'T SETTLE for a guitar that is a "little better" because you're impatient waiting for that killer Gibson. It will get you nowhere ultimately, and we've seen it happen to several of our own forum members...and they're always disappointed. Set your sights on your goal and don't compromise, even if it means playing a piece of crap for a while longer.

As for as financially setting a goal...both the LP and SG Standards are expensive ($2,600 and $1,500 brand new respectively). But I would shoot for the $2,600 goal and THEN go try them out. That way, if you end up going home with an SG you'll also have some extra cash that you can immediately turn around and put towards something else...hell, theoretically that $900 you saved could buy you a killer tube amp.

Hang in there! I remember being EXACTLY in your shoes 5 years ago.

Les Paul all the way which is expected on the Les Paul Forum post the same question in the SG area and you'll see the opposite with everyone voting SG so just remember.

Were right there wrong LP are just better than SG's in every. Kind of kidding SG is a great guitar and after you buy your Les Paul a SG would make a good second guitar.

It probably good advice to play them both, but I'm sold on Les Pauls so my personal take is forget the SG... forget you ever saw it and just buy the LP.
