cesario Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 hey does any one know if gibson has changed anything in the gibson sg special faded sence it was first made in the early 2000s.
EpiNova95 Posted August 30, 2012 Posted August 30, 2012 The original ones used leftover fretboard materials from the recently discontinued Gothic SG...ebony with moon crescent inlays (standard placement, rather than just on the 12th fret like the Gothics). They ran out of inlays then offered ebony board with dot inlays before switching to rosewood with dots. Now its baked maple with dots.
SGgypsyboy Posted September 2, 2012 Posted September 2, 2012 Sweetwater has quite a few that still have the rosewood fretboards. They post pics for each individual serial number.
Wilbury Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Now its baked maple with dots. The fretboard of my 2011 Special is made of what I think is North American rosewood. I've never seen a Special with a baked maple fretboard.

I've never seen a Special with a baked maple fretboard. Interesting...Gibson.com has baked maple listed under the specs, and that's what I've seen at Guitar Center recently. Wouldn't be too surprising I guess since they are using the north American rosewood On the 60s tribute.
Searcy Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 The early versions also featured point to point working in the control cavity where as the newer ones have printer circuit boards. I think the change over was 2008 but I'm not 100% sure on that. Here's my 2008 with a replacement pick guard.
