How much is the bling?

solving

Recommended Posts

Tried to get an answer to this in another post but will try again......

How much would you say you have to pay for the "bling" of a Doves In Flight... 10%....20%?

Still trying to decide between a DIF and SJ-200 TV VOS

do you like fancier inlays on guitars or are you a simple guy ?

I probably would say it's 25 percent of all the guitar ... because they inlays are only there to make the guitar look nicer ... what really counts is how the guitar is constructed . so if you are of simple taste and like the feel of the Super Jumbo body go with the SJ 200 . if you are a bling man than go with the DIF

2 completely different beast there. Personally I love an sj200 but because I like a jumbo over a dread. I love how light the j200 tv is but I'm not sold on the adi top I had three jumbos and the tv was not my favorite. The doves in flight I don't own one never played one but I'm sure it's no different than a dove. So if you like a fancy guitar go for it. Either way you can't go wrong!

I think you can get a J200V for a little less than $4K & a Doves in flight for just under $5k new.

So its 20% more...price.

Buying used seems to be 20% less .

The inlays on Doves in flight make the guitar more of a work of art & I think eventually rarer...

but its like picking a wife.. what do you prefer playing?

DIF has a premium Sitka top....dreadnaught..scale?..short I dont remember.

J200V Adirondack top ..hide glue jumbo..slower response..body...long scale.

Amount of inlay..maybe 40% more inlay DIF.?

I know I've said this before here.... years ago I was torn between J200 and a DIF.

What I really liked about the J200 is the natural finished back & sides, it was just a little too big for me.

I REALLY liked the DIF, (as I already had a Dove), but wasn't wild about the red back & sides.

So..... I found a DIF with natural maple back & sides....and all is well.

You can get a new Dove for under $3K, and a new DIF for about $4K.

Photos, (just 'cause I still think it's beautiful)

Man oh man, Bob, that is still one beautiful guitar! I agree with you that the natural finish is the way to go on these. I've never been fond of the red stain, either on mahogany or maple. Why hide the beauty of the bare wood? And as far as bling goes, well, that DIF is just right, although I'm nut sure I could bring myself to playing it on a daily basis. It's just too nice.

Nick, if I'm picking out a tune at the kitchen table, I prefer my old Dove, (so I don't have to worry 'bout it)....but as for making a video...the DIF is preferred even above my 'Bird.

And thanks.... I do like it.

Slower response with an Adirondack top? That goes against nearly all professional and popular consensus - regardless of guitar brand - regarding Adirondack tops. They are in fact praised for, among other things, their fast attack transient. This makes adi-topped guitars a favorite with Bluegrass and lead players.

Adjectives associated with this choice as a top wood are: 'snap', 'punch'and 'bite'. Having owned several Adirondack top guitar I can definitely agree with that description."Slow response"? Nope.
