JazzGtr Posted September 5, 2012 Posted September 5, 2012 The last Gibson I've purchased was my CS 356 couple years ago. I really have not seen anything else in the Gibson line up that's worth the money. Is it me? Jazz,
jimmyl51 Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 No it is not you. Gibson's prices have simply skyrocketed in comparison with what people are making these days given our absolutely wonderful economy under our current administration. Yes there are people who can afford these Gibsons, however check out the Gibson stores in Mainland China if you REALLY want to see who CAN afford Gibson guitars these days.........check out the Gibson showcase store in Shanghai if you want to see some absolutely beautiful AND expensive instruments......jim in Oklahoma City
JazzGtr Posted September 6, 2012 Author Posted September 6, 2012 BTW, Money is not a factor, nor is our current administration that's keeping me from buying. In fact since you went there, personally I'm better off today than I was 4 years ago. My issue with Gibson is the lack of quality and interest for any of their current line up. My L5 is the best jazz box on the planet and I love it. And my other three Gibson guitars (CS 356, Custom LP and CS 346) are great in their own right too. I'm just not feeling it with their current crop of guitars and I was just wondering if others are feeling the same. Jazz,
Versatile Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 Call me the lucky one.... I've bought a few Gibsons in the last 5 yrs or so and kept and enjoyed them all Hard to follow the L5 act though No issues with ES 335, ES 330, ES 137, Firebird.... And I am a stickler for quality... Can be different at the top end though...charging similar money to the sole independent luthier... V
jimmyl51 Posted September 6, 2012 Posted September 6, 2012 I too can afford a new Gibson however I would dare to say that the majority of players out there simply cannot afford an L5 or Super 400 these days. Believe I love Gibson guitars however I still get a kick out of the fact that just about every guitar that I have bought from the company over the years has always required a setup to get the guitar to play correctly. Granted I am picky however I do believe that the darn guitar should have the neck adjusted and frets leveled correctly so the average player should not have to put out additional monies over what he/she has already paid out. jim hahn at Tinker AFB Oklahoma City, Oklahoma
kidblast Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 It seems price hikes are not exclusive to Gibson products. Have you guys seen the prices some of the new Fender's are going for these days? $2k for a 52 Tele? a few years ago, they were a grand. $2,500 for a Fender Select? (Strat or Tele) 600 bucks for a blues jr? the first time I bought one, was about 10 year ago, it was HALF the cost, same amp.. and I would LOVE an L5, problem is, can't justify the $5k But I do like having a hollow boyd archtop. so Instead, I picked up an Emperor Regent in 2011,, however, now those are discontinued. So the offerings for a more affordable jazz box, just got even more sparse. and I'm not kidding myself, not comparing an L5 to a Regent, just sayin it was a good fit for a Jazz box for me, and what I actually was able to spend on something that to me is more of a niche instrument as I'm not a Jazz player, but I love that guitar all the same. I paid under 700 for it, new w/case from MF.
Versatile Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 No doubt the L5 is tops in the jazz arena...particularly with the 'Wes factor' A beautiful big bodied tone machine I was in the right place 3-4 years ago when $2 = £1 and stretched out for an ES 330 and ES 137... Both IMO capable of rich jazz tones and much more (truly 'Versatile' guitars)... There are several really excellent Gibson specialist dealers in the UK who have a tendency to supply well set up playable instruments V
