grk Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Hi everyone. First post here but not new at forums or Gibson. In the past I've had several different LP's, best one being 85 Custom. Then I made a switch to PRS for a short while. While I like PRS, I'm gassing big time for a P90 Gibson. (or a mini humbucker which I can swap with a p90) Subject lists the models I'm looking at. What are your opinions on these models. Which one do you think I should go for if we leave price out of the equation? What are the differences? Any of these chambered? Thanks for any input.
Tim Plains Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 The Deluxe & 40th, I know nothing about. I have a R6 and it's great. The only difference between the R4 and R6 is the R4 doesn't have a bridge...just a stop bar. You can buy chambered reissues. Try googling 'cloud 9 guitars'. Any chambered reissue has a serial number that begins with CR.
RichCI Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Out of the R4 and R6, I'd go with the R6 just to get a stop tailpiece. Just to throw something else into the mix, you might check out a CP Thornton Blues Queen. I've been drooling over those for a few months now.
grk Posted November 27, 2008 Author Posted November 27, 2008 How about a '54 Custom reissue? Isn't that a humbucker?

Tim Plains Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 Nope, '54 Customs have P-90s. '57 Customs have humbuckers. http://www.gibsoncustom.com/flash/products/lespauls/54bb/1954Custom.html

I wish there was a place I could check all these guitars in person

Just to throw something else into the mix, you might check out a CP Thornton Blues Queen. I've been drooling over those for a few months now. That looks like a really well built guitar. How much is it? I only ask because if it's the same price range as a lester, then why bother with it? I know, it's a lot different to a les paul... I'm just kinda set in my ways. This is the second time i've recommended this today, but I have an 06 goldtop standard with p90s. It was "third hand" by the time I bought it, but it's an amazing guitar, and cheaper than most other options you've had so far. Don't get me wrong, if you have the money, get an r6 or an r4. I would go for the R4 custom... It just looks amazing, with the black p90s. Let's not forget that the 1954 custom had the bridge + stopbar. I'm pretty sure that the 56 was the first "standard" or rather just "Les Paul Goldtop" (whichever way you look at it) to have the stopbar + bridge. I may be wrong though.
grk Posted November 28, 2008 Author Posted November 28, 2008 Honestly the lack of adjustable bridge on r4 is not a bad thing for my taste. My prs doesn't have an adjustable bridge but it has amazing intonation and more importantly, amazing sustain. So stop tail only isn't a deal breaker at all. Quite the contrary I'm leaning towards r4 right now. I'm not a fan of gold top (that makes me one in a million I think ) but I can live with it. Are r4's all solid or weight relieved?
KennyF Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 I vote R4. The absence of a bridge adds to the overall equation, IMHO.
