justin.guitar.. Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 SO you get what you pay for? i dont think its always true. I actualy played both and found i liked the Vintage Mahogany alot better what do you think? The Burst bucker pros are a nice thing to have too.
FennRx Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 gotta have a maple cap and a nitro finish..and one of the finishes has the ebony board. the VM isnt bad, but i'll take the Studio.
RichCI Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I really like the look of the VM; kind of a Bob Marley thing.
Tim Plains Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Looks wise, I'd go with the VM...although, I don't like BB Pros anymore. Not in a LP, anyways.
Murph Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 Man, I just got a sweet Studio Fireburst. For my daughter. The first one had a splinter, but this one is nice. Very nice. Gloss and all. I'm sorry. The VM is a good idea for a budget axe, but the Studio is a step up. Ya think? Best to ya. Murph.
Thundergod Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I would go with the vintage mahogany but only when it is at $699, because that guitar has a) non sticky neck, and is cheap enough and unfinished enough where you can refinish her to your liking without wasting a fine flame maple cap. I do like burstbucker pros btw... why don't you like them on lesters Tim, and where do you like them?
SRV-Zeppelin Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I do like burstbucker pros btw... why don't you like them on lesters Tim' date=' and where do you like them?[/quote'] He doesn't like them because they don't come in R9s...
SRV-Zeppelin Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 I voted for Studio for the same reason as FennRX.... an LP just isn't an LP without maple and nitro.
Thundergod Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 He doesn't like them because they don't come in R9s... I keep forgetting he is no longer a human being but a CUSTOM SHOP SNOB!
Silverbursted Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 It really does come down to the finish for me. Though I don't think I would purchase either one. This part is blasphemy; but for the same money, I'd probably get a top of the line Fender. Sorry fellow Gibson guys.

Thundergod Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 This part is blasphemy; but for the same money' date=' I'd probably get a top of the line Fender. Sorry fellow Gibson guys.[/quote'] That would be the right thing to do. Very nice fenders at that price range.
myspace.com/jessenoah Posted November 26, 2008 Posted November 26, 2008 top of the line tele or maybe another 57 ri strat, but with a flatter fretboard
Ian Martin Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 *shrugs* The Studio has always seemed to look half-assed cosmetically, at least to me. It's a LP trying to still try and look like a "big boy" model but is just too lazy to go all the way. At least with the VM, it doesn't even try to be anything other than stripped down and ready to go. Here's a better question: VM or BFG?
justin.guitar.. Posted November 27, 2008 Author Posted November 27, 2008 Yea thats part of the reason ian i didnt feel right playing the studio but the VM actually feels good i think it was because of the looks and the studio felt kind of cheepy like in my hands not the sound i dont know why
Ian Martin Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I think I'd buy a Studio and sand off the finish.
SilverLesterStd Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I love me some VM! My son has one and I play it many times when he's not on it. The tone is marvelous. The neck is smooth and very fast (ditto on the not sticky). The finish is definately not glossy, but the overall apearance does much more for me than a BFG. We tried out several LP Studios (maybe 9), and all of the VMs sounded better to my ear. At the time, the glossy ones were $1399 and the VMs were $899. I would have certainly paid the diff for better tone if it were there. However, that is just my opinion. Some of you guitar slingers may have a different experience. If I were going on appearance in that price range, I'd have a Schecter. The Schecter's tone is not to my liking, and the glossy studio, while a fine guitar, was a few Wheaties short in the vigor department to me.
saturn Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 I had to go with Studio, just because I own one have have to justify my purchase to myself#-o Seriously, the VM is sweet and for the money a much better value IMO. But I like the maple top and am one of the few who actually prefer the 490R/498T over BB Pros. If I'm getting BBs I want 1 and 2s for a truly vintage tone. Pros are great, but are a little too trebly and harsh IMO.
Doc Music Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Got a VM and Wine Red Studio. I reach for the VM First and more often. Like the BBs.
KSG_Standard Posted December 1, 2008 Posted December 1, 2008 Go for the VM it has BB's vs. the Studio which has 490R/498T (look at the negative posts on the 498T) the VM also has the non-sticky neck and a better vibe. My 2 cents!
LP_VM55 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 One thing I wanna point is the Vintage Mahogany is a studio model...just natural wood finish and different pick-ups... and on which one you should get? They both are great guitars, but since I have VM I would recommend it. Since it's about what? 200-300 bucks cheaper you can spend the extra on pedals or an amp or anything... On the other hand, if you like the gloss finish and 490's sound better than BB's then by all means go with the Studio...might i suggest the Red Wine finish? It is GORGEOUS...if i didn't have the VM I'd have the red wine studio... Either way i think you'll be happy... good luck!
LP_VM55 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 *shrugs* The Studio has always seemed to look half-assed cosmetically' date=' at least to me. At least with the VM, it doesn't even try to be anything other than stripped down and ready to go. Here's a better question: VM or BFG?[/quote'] The whole purpose of the Les Paul Studio (1983 when they were first made) was NOT to be flashy like a standard. They designed it for STUDIO musicians, they stripped off anything that did not contribute to the sound and tone to make it lighter, less expensive, and more practical. As it turns out, they became very popular and eventually became the #1 selling Gibson product...
Flight959 Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 Im going with the VM on this one! Flight959
mr newhaven Posted December 2, 2008 Posted December 2, 2008 i have a VM...i have had it for over a year...i had the frets re-dressed (my only beef with the guitar) and now its the greatest guitar ever! for all of you out there saying you would pick the studio over the VM b/c of pickups and the nitro...NEWSFLASH!!! ALL GIBSONS HAVE A NITRO FINISH...ALL GIBSONS INCLUDING THE VM!!! Secondly mahogany top and sides and back comes across a little darker than the maple but to me it sounds devine! the neck is seriously the most comfortable ever! and the pickups...BB Pro's...say what you want but they scream vintage tone...(if they are good enough for the $2500+ Standards...why cant my little $900 axe have them?) go on harmony central and look up the vintage mahogany...wait a sec...i'll do the looking up for you... http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar/product/Gibson/Les+Paul+Vintage+Mahogany/10/1 out of 78 people the avg given this guitar is a 9.2 now for the studio: http://reviews.harmony-central.com/reviews/Guitar/product/Gibson/Les+Paul+Studio/10/1 345 people only gave it an 8.9. now i know this seems a bit trivial...and i admit i take every review i read with a grain of salt...but on average more people have more to say about a VM than a regular old studio... there has to be some universal appeal...it comes with a gibson hardcase...premium pickups...a no nonsense bob marley-esque rock and roll finish...and it has sustain for days... now to compare both is a bit of a luxury...its like looking thru a Maxim magazine and picking which girl is hotter on page 8...etc...the problem is...all the girls are hot in Maxim i dont care who you are and if you werent given a choice you'd be happy with whoever...its the same thing here...if not given a choice...any of the Gibsons would be more than excellent...but seeing as though we do have a choice...get the cheaper, more BADASS GIBSON!
