jefleppard Posted November 27, 2008 Posted November 27, 2008 comments anyone? looks nice but thanks to our recent "neck reset school" some flags went up for me. the seller says the bridge has been shaved. the neck set is original and on correct angle. so, why then, the bridge shave? just for lower action? on a 74 year old guitar? hmmmm. whaddya think? http://cgi.ebay.com/Gibson-L-50-Acoustic-Guitar-Vintage-1934-Rare_W0QQitemZ120340999671QQcmdZViewItemQQptZGuitar?hash=item120340999671&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A2%7C65%3A10%7C39%3A1%7C240%3A1318
ballcorner Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Over time, it is almost always necessary to take a bit off the bridge on any archtop due to the fact that the strings cut grooves into the wood. When the grooves are deep, the string is prevented from vibrating as well as it would if it were sitting on top of the bridge. So, the bridge issue is probably not that big of a deal. The mentioned repairs are pretty average for the age of the guitar as is the suggestion that a pickup may have been installed and later removed. I have played some of these L-fiddies, and I just don't hear what I would need to invest to own one. That is the larger issue from my perspective - that and the fact that I find them inherently ugly, lacking the grace of an f-hole archtop and lacking the tonality of a flat from the era.
ksdaddy Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 That J100 is the best bargain on ebay I've seen lately. Much better bang for the buck than an antique. If I didn't already have a J200 I'd be all over that like a cheap suit.
ltinspector Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Anybody notice the slew of J-180 and clones on there all of a sudden? I had a keen interest in one a while back, my fav country singer Keith Whitley played one. But I've never played one. Always thought the body style and black look were cool. Now I think there's 2 real J-180s and 3 of the Epi clone SQ-180s on there.
