kaleb
Of course tone is in the gear! But Clapton still sounds like Clapton no matter what. He may not have the Woman Tone anymore, but he still has his sound. And the Woman Tone is all power-amp/speaker clipping. It's warm and throaty, not gainy. Preamp gain is not the way to get it. of

Preamp gain is not the way to get it. of Clapton still gets a fine woman tone out of his Strat when he wants it. He does it by rolling back the tone on his neck pick up and pulling the knob out on his 25db mid booster. And yes, he sound like Clapton no matter what his gear, but that's not tone it's style and technique. It's more about phrasing than tone, although it can be argued (and often is) that technique and style produce tone, and that is a little bit true, but misleading, because some picking and fretting techniques are about producing tone (palm muting, picking, and some vibrato techniques that produce a scraping sound for example). You won't get The Ventures tone out of an overdriven Fender Amp, but you can get it out of a clean Mesa Boogie.
