50th Anniversary '62 Sorrento and Sheraton Reissues

I just got an email from a company I buy stuff from occasionally and they are showing 50th Anniversary '62 Sorrento and '62 Sheraton Reissues for pre-order. UK price is £529.00 for the Sorrento and £599.00 for the Sheraton. They are described as "outfits" so I guess that will include a case etc, no detail or pix yet. So, has anybody else heard about this? I checked on Gibson.com, but a search for Sorrento came up with nothing.

Well, there's no more info than I've said already and no pix but here's a link to the company. If you sort by 'Popularity' at the top of the page (default) and go to 'Page 3' they show up about half way down.

(Also worth taking a look at their 'Rockinbetter' Rickenbacker copies while you're there)

Gotcha. Thanks. Looking forward to seeing some pics.

The pricing & "outfit" status appears to indicate that these will be done in a very similar fashion to the nicely executed 50th Anniversary '61 Casino, which was made in China with Gibson USA pickups. To be accurate, both new reissues should be sporting mini-humbuckers. Very interesting!

I see they will produce the Sheraton in cherry.Just when I thought my 355 had satisfied my gas for a while(10 months), now this. No info on the Press site. I guess the listed models were chosen from Epi1's inquiry. Any way, Jim if you are reading, let's get some product photos released.

Where did you see that? I can't seem to find any info on this reissue. I'm very curious about it, as I have an original '62 in cherry. Even though I'm in love with it (it's pretty close to a perfect guitar), I'd be curious to know why they chose to do a reissue of this particular year. It's the last year of the wider headstock, and the second year of mini-humbuckers. First year for one-piece necks a la Gibson (the old Epi inventory of 5-piece necks was used up). First year that cherry finish was available, and first year of the streamlined Epi script on the head.

I'm a different Jim, :) and I don't have photos of the reissue, but here's what an original looks like:

That's a real beauty, and being a red '62 with it's unique set of features is very cool! I recently was fortunate enough to find a mint AIUSA John Lee Hooker Sheraton in vintage sunburst, with mini-humbuckers & Frequensator tailpiece. There's something really special about those mini-hums in a semi-hollow body.

I did a search for the title of the guitar and found this site that had them listed with what I take to be street prices:

Guitar Backorders

Not sure if this is correct, but it states CH, NA and VS.

That CH got my heart pumping.

Still waiting to hear more from Epi.

Ooh, and re-issues of '62 Crestwood Customs in Cherry and White and '62 Rivoli basses in Natural and Vintage Sunburst at $832.00 each. And if those are 'street prices' it looks like the c £600.00 UK prices for the Sorrento and Sheraton models will be the better deal.

Good detective work! Looks like quite a few new models/options on the horizon.

Thanks. It is a strange way to find out about new products.

I don't understand how some information can be released to a few retailers without an announcement.

I would imagine we wont be seeing the actual items until the end of next year.

They have had the Pelham Blue 355 advertised for almost 4 months now with a delivery date of January 2013.

Epiphone does know how to keep us waiting.

Cool find on the Cherry. Would be a shame not to have these out by the end of the year being a 50th anniversary and all...

By the looks of it, the Cherry will be the only one with the vibrato arm (212TV) and all three finishes will come cheaper with Frequensator as they are plain old 212T(wo pick up)

Sorrento in Natural and Royal Tan :)

Clark, good spot on the Vibrato. And Bob good read on the Royal Olive.

To me, this year was kind of quiet from Epiphone.

Enjoyed the ES reissues and picked up a white 355 in January.

Nothing else seemed to thrill me after that.

The Royale series, both black and white left me cold.

The TV Pelham Blue 355 sparked some interest, but after buying the white, well, not going to turn it around so quick.

But with this list, finally a Sheraton and Sorrento reissue (although I thought they were playing around with a P-90 Sorrento reissue a year or so ago).

I also have to mention the Rivoli bass reissue and a more moderately priced Crestwood Custom.

And all street priced under $1,000 USD.

The thing that baffles me is, how can some of this information get out to distributors without any announcement?

You would imagine their website would have had this information.

With no photos, they might still be in the planning stages.

Anyway, I am so looking forward to these releases.

Royal Olive indeed! I'd never heard of it before you mentioned it so a very good spot indeed. I always assumed it was Sorrento's Royal Tan even though it was a bit greener. A nice finish too.

I don't know why these companies have the info public before Epiphone but the same thing happened with the Swingster/Wilshire worn finishes on Thomann. Hopefully an announcement from Epiphone soon will guarantee the reality that these are going to happen.

For the last 10 years I've been saying Epiphone should go back to their 60s models on top of their basic function of producing cheap Gibson models and rolling out interesting and varied entry level guitars.. I suppose the 50 year anniversary to celebrate the best decade for guitar music is a good time to do it and they've taught themselves slowly but surely to do it right with the USA Assembled, Elitist and Inspired By series paving the way for a full scale standard production of classic Epiphone models.

I mean the standard Casinos have done their job in the last 20 years but there seems to be a growing market for 60s style guitars at affordable prices instead of ones that are merely similar. In terms of class, look, feel and playability the IBJL Casinos and the '61 Casino just add a bit of quality and elegance to a model that has gone up and down over the years in spec, finish and feel.

Maybe moving to a purpose built chinese factory wasn't a bad idea after all :)

Now.... CORONET, CRESTWOOD, OLYMPIC, GRANADA, CENTURY.... etc etc etc

THAT, is Really AWESOME!! I'm very envious! ;>)

I too, hope they'll offer the "Reissue" in "Cherry," and with "USA" mini's, and hardware/electronics. I wonder, too, if this will be a "European/Asian" only, edition??! God, I HOPE not! ;>b But, I guess Anderton's would probably get them, so I could order from them, I suppose.

See post #12 in this thread for a link to The Music Zoo's backorder list, and there they are!

Well, Sheesh...I must have looked right past it! Thanks, bobouz! I noticed they're getting

some '62 Rivoli basses, too! COOL! [thumbup]

Sure would love to see, some actual Photos, as well!!
