Gibson J-45?

Hello All,

Recently a friend of mine GAVE ME an old Gibson guitar. I've researched on the web and still can't be sure of the model. It seems to have no markings or numbers at the neck joint inside of the soundhole. It has ladder type bracing.

The only picture I have at the moment is below... It has the Gibson block style logo in gold on the headstock and white plastic tuner keys. I'll try and get more pictures as soon as I can.

I assume when you mention ladder bracing that your referring to the bracing of the top, not the back, right? If that's the case, then it's an LG-1, not a J-45, which has always had a x-braced top. whereas the LG-1 had a ladder braced top.

What year it is will be the question. Normally, Gibson's in 1946 didn't show FON's on the neckblock, so that would seem a possibility. I doubt it though, since the 1946 model had a rectangular bridge, the one you show has a reverse belly bridge. Please post a photo of the headstock. Also, is the headstock tapered (thicker near the nut tapering toward the end)?

Lower bout too small for a J45. An LG of some kind. No block logos until 1948, I believe (or perhaps very late 1947), so unlikely to be a 1946. Can't see whether it has a brace/joint thingy running lengthways down the inside-back. If it doesn't it is an LG1. If it does, it's not, and is not ladder braced on the top (where it counts).

Thank You guys so much! It does appear to be an LG 1. I'm a Fender man myself and didn't know too much about Gibson beyond the Les Paul. Interesting that you mention a replaced bridge because when tuned to 440 the back end wants to separate from the body. It also needs a refret. It does still have good tone, all things considered. Again, Thank You Gibson guys for answering my question!
