John Lee Walker Posted November 28, 2008 Posted November 28, 2008 Here's one for all you Guy Clark fans out there, if you don't already know. Not only is Guy a superb singer-songwriter, but he is also a great luthier and builds his own signature guitars. He has a few styles, but the one he is most known for is patterned after the J-100, but with a revised carved headstock and scalloped X-braces, bone nut and saddle and maple neck. He doesn't sell them, but gives them to worthy friends. Rumor has it that Steve Earle owns one, Billy Joe Shaver, and Nancy Griffith. Townes Van Zandt owned one, as well. Guy finishes each guitar with a stamp inside with his own thumbprint - in his blood. I would love the opportunity to play one of those someday... Talk about GAS...sheesh
Jinder Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Guy's guitars are the stuff of legend. I met Darden Smith recently, who is something of a nylon-string specialist, and he said that he'd played Rodney Crowell's Guy Clark nylon-string, and it was the greatest guitar he'd ever laid hands on. I can say with a tiny degree of authority that Townes never owned one...I have spoken at length with Jeanene Van Zandt, who told me that for the last few years of his life, Townes owned his J200, his Takamine lawsuit Martin copy (the Tin Man), and a custom-made electric. They are all with his children now, J.T. Has the J200, Will has the electric and Katie Belle has the Tin Man. I bet Townes would have loved a Guy Clark guitar though.
John Lee Walker Posted November 29, 2008 Author Posted November 29, 2008 Hey Jinder - Thanks for the heads up on that. My info came from a backstage conversation at Gruene Hall a couple of years ago while talking with Ray Wylie Hubbard and his bandmates. After talking with them, I went to a website with Guy's guitar info on it and it says there that his favorite guitars are styled after his favorite Martin. I was told J100s. Go figger. Then someone else told me Steve Earle owns one and it is a J100 copy. Regardless. I'd sure like to lay my hands on one. You are correct, they are the stuff of legend, and, apparently, wild backstage rumor:) You know what they say about Texas...
jefleppard Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 You know what they say about Texas... ...all my ex's live there?
jefleppard Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 I am NOT one of your ex's. maybe so..but i am currently looking for my my 'next ex'. (band name alert)
onewilyfool Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Here's an interview in his wood shop..... http://www.gearwire.com/media/guy-clark-guitars-interview.mov
surfpup Posted November 29, 2008 Posted November 29, 2008 Very cool. I enjoyed the interview clip. Always considered myself a big Guy Clark fan, but never knew he made instruments himself!
