boboldstring Posted October 5, 2012 Posted October 5, 2012 Hi There. Im on the look out for a Slope dread (or square) I play in a folk blues sort of style - I have played my current dread for 19 years now (((IT IS A LONG SCALE GUITAR))). I love it.But its only a cheapie really. (well not high end) Have been looking for a good guitar that could do it all, I bare finger pick 70% 30% finger nail strum - I like to dig into the strings and get the top moving. I had my heart set on a J45 TV or the Southern Jumbo TV - But i recently did a bit of a road trip and tryed many guitars, including the two TVs above. (also played a 1952 J45) But when i played these guitars in my style i could hear alot of string slap onto the frets,as if i was playing to hard, (and this was with the high factory set action) I played a long scale D18 Martin at the same time and that was fine.. So it must have been because the J45s are SHORT SCALE ?? Now im thinking about an Advanced Jumbo Long scale slope dread.. Mahogany sitka I was hoping some folks out there may be able to help - What gauge strings do the TVs come with new ? Would heavyer strings fix this ? Do you think i should go for the long scale dread instead ? Your thoughts would be much appreciated : )
jedzep Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Maybe the D18 is your solution. Seems like you have a percussive style but of course every song doesn't lend itself to that. I don't know what I'd do if I had to live with one acoustic for all the songs I like to play, but my D18 certainly has the characteristics to handle it all. I'm lucky to have an old LG2 to play like a drum. This might be the guitar to look at, as they are built to take a driving beat.
EuroAussie Posted October 6, 2012 Posted October 6, 2012 Sounds to me with your choice of music and style of playing an AJ is the guitar for you.
boboldstring Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 A D18 is definitley on my list of thinking But i didnt want to give up on the J45 just yet - Some of the Singer songwriters i admire play or have played a J45 Never thought about the LG2. I do play soft sometimes. My songs/playing would be more Malcolm Holcolmbe than say James Taylor I have been looking at the Santa Cruz Vintage jumbo (long scale) ? Or ordering an AJ with mahogany back & sides Can the D18 play a bit of mean blues when it wants to..

Though I'm more attuned to the drier Gibson tone, one of the things I appreciate about the Martin dreads is that they almost have two available voicings...a chime-like quality for tender and subtle tones and a more than adequate blues drive. What I least like about Martin is the lack of an adjustable truss rod. When it's time to reset the neck you gotta pony up the $$
boboldstring Posted October 6, 2012 Author Posted October 6, 2012 Thanks Jed Lots to think about I couldnt find an AJ close enough to try.Plus there all Rosewood The D18 i played was a 1966.

Have you ever tried a rosewood AJ? They are a lot different than other rosewood guitars IMO. They have that punchy Gibson tone that other rosewood a don't have. I'd at least give one a shot and forget about the wood. Good luck in the hunt
