FirstMeasure
That was my favorite song and my favorite movie when it was on The Movie Channel (I think I was 9). Actually I think it was called Star Channel, and that was way before HBO dominated the market. Still one of my all time favorite songs.
CowboyBillyBob1
This entire movie, The Last Waltz, is worth watching. Love The Band and all the guest artists are a blast too.
MissouriPicker
Thanks for the video. Hadn't seen it before. This oldie but goodie song has always been one of my favorites...Lots of history in the song too. Good stuff.

EVOL!
Right on, brother Searcy. Sometimes you post gems and sometimes, like this thread, you post nirvana. This version is the definitive version. Helps that - I love the Band (thanks dad) - Levon Helm is my musical hero My dream is to sing and play drums in a band. Since I now do both I think this will be my next life in music. EVOL!
I also think Levon got jipped with songwriting credits for this song. No way Robertson put the whole thing together on his own.

RaysEpiphone
Virgil Cain is the name and I served on the Danville Train..... Great mood grabber! Kinda gets ya in the soul if you listen to the word's and the music is the same. The south lost the war but it's still a good song, I don't care want any one say! L5Larry
Great song, but... This video is from "The Last Waltz",.... either the greatest R&R concert video ever filmed, ... OR THE WORST, depending on your point of view. There's a lot of insight written in Levon's book about this concert (and the aftermath). READ IT! OR THE WORST, depending on your point of view. There's a lot of insight written in Levon's book about this concert (and the aftermath). READ IT! I haven't read the book, and I don't (or can't?) have an opinion when I don't know the facts, but dang... One thing that I think makes THE BAND a great band and worth looking up to, was the thought that a group of guys can all be equals and great, and do it together as a team without a single "hero" or main driving force. It's always what kinda made them heros to me. Between my ego and my freinds, I would prefer freinds. But if they should happen to make my ego big, I won't forget who made it big. FirstMeasure
None of the tell all controversy changes the performers or the performance from that night, and its wonderful that they got it on film. Some of Levon's complaints come of as a little petty and self centered, just as petty and self centered as Roberts. The only difference is Roberts won the arguments so Levon is going to be disgruntled about it. Selfishness and pettiness in a group of musicians? Go on! The Band didn't get along, but they made great music. Bing Crosby beat his kids, but he made great music. Benny Goodman was a heavy handed task master as a band leader, but he made great music. Jimi Hendrix was a junkie, but he made great music. Your father is a role model, these guys just make great music.
