50's neck

Recommended Posts

Just bought my very first Gibson Les Paul (Les Paul Studio Deluxe "Iced Tea" with 50's neck). It arrived two days ago and I've only had a few hours of playing time on it. I woke up with pain in my left hand, like I punched a wall. It's really sore between the pinky and ring finger. When I picked up the guitar and started playing I instantly figured out that it was from playing on that 50's neck.

Has anyone had similar problems when switching from a slim taper 60's neck to a 50's neck? I'm assuming that this will subside and that I'm just stretching like I haven't before...but it's seriously taking the fun outta jammin.

Thanks!

I have both, a 50s and a 60s neck LP, plus PRS wide/fat neck guitars, and an Explorer neck guitar-

Never noticed any real difference in how my hands felt between all of them, but, I do have long fingers- don't know if that makes a diff.

I've never been comfortable on Fender necks-

There is no perfect guitar. I prefer a 50's neck. But I notice on songs with a lot of barre chords, my hand gets less tired on a slimmer profile. But for lead playing, I prefer to feel some wood in the cup of my palm as I play. Hopefully you hand pain will go away after you adjust to the new neck. I go back and forth between different size necks and fret board radius' without any problem.

I've never felt pain from playing my 50's neck. I also frequently change from a Epi LP Custom, 60's, a Trad Pro 50's, a Schecter, a Fender Deluxe Strat, and a Tele copy. Many different neck shapes. I guess I have about medium length fingers, not short, but definetely not long.

I suspect that this will improve for you with time as you adjust to the neck and then you won't notice any issues going back and forth between neck styles. I say this as I had a similar issue only in reverse. I have played chubby Gibson or Gibson style necks since I started playing (a little over 20 yrs. A couple years ago I picked up a couple of Fender styled guitars with much thinner necks a shallower radius, I had a lot of pain in my hand initially. It stopped after awhile, as some one else mentioned I think it had to do with the way I was holding the neck and fingering the board, which I'm certain I modified subconsciously. Now I can go back and forth between neck styles with no problems at all, although I do still prefer the chubby Gibson style necks.
