taxman
I do not need another guitar....but I came across something called a "Gibson SG Standard Limited Natural Burst." Wow. Exactly what I want. Now I know of some fine dealers whose prices on a new Gretsch will blow your mind. I know of some fine dealers whose prices on a new Rickenbacker will blow your mind. But I do not know about Gibson dealers. Which Ma and Pop Gibson dealer out there in the USA can offer a deal on one of these Gibson Limited Natural Burst SGs? What Gibson dealers have you used that offer an outstanding price and service? Thanks (and if you want the name of a Gretsch or Rickenbacker dealer who offers insane prices, I can help you out). I don't need this...but I sure wouldn't say no to one if the price were right.
taxman
Hmmm, so there are no Ma and Pa dealers in the USA that sell Gibson SGs? Everyone here who owns an SG bought theirs at Guitar Center? At all other guitar forums there are sponsors -- dealers who specialize in selling Gretsches, Rickenbackers, Fenders... I give them my business. Aren't there any dealers who mostly deal with Gibsons?
charlie brown
Try these guys! I've always had great deals, and service, with them. http://www.wichitaband.com/guitar.html CB
stein
Well, I see you REALLY want an answer, but I don't have "the man" who can help you. 2 reasons: for one, I don't know where you are. And sinse you seem to be asking for a really low price, there really isn't much to be gained for a dealer I could recommend, and for you there isn't a reason to recommend a dealer to you that I know of here because they wouldn't be in a position to give any service worth paying for if you are on the other side of the country. Brick and morter, "ma and pa", is about face to face, in person, lets talk about what we can do for each other. A store worth paying to is going to have inventory, resources, and a willingness to back you up and offer you whatever help they have available. If that MEANS something, you will want to pay them for a job, just like any other service. I pause here to say that IF you have the ability to go somewhere local and PLAY the thing, that is more valueble and the best you can do for your own money than anything typed above or below. If price is all you are concerned with, then I might suggest you take the retail, calculate 40% off, and make some calls until you find someone willing to sell it to you for that. That's a standard any shop can do. It is also the lowest you are likely to get. If you want lower than that, you will need a reason why someone should give it to you. If it is more than that, YOU should be asking them why and what you are getting from them besides the guitar. There are plenty of internet places that do nothing more than sell stuff. There isn't much more you can get from them besides a return policy if you don't like it, and a little freindly chat, and maybe an exchange of info to prevent guitars going back and forth. If giving business to a ma and pa store is your intention, you might consider the possibility of paying them a little, like maybe getting it for 30% off instead of forty. That is, if you think they deserve it. I think many of them do, at least some of the ones I used to deal with. Not all, but some. I mean, it doesn't always hurt to pay a little more if you are getting something for it in return (and, you can afford it).
Holmis
So, you didn´t know you needed that burst SG, i could have told you :-) I don´t know if i´ve seen a burst SG before, anyhow it looks real nice!
taxman
Nah, it isn't just about price. The SG retail goes for $1,200. That's not Gretsch White Falcon range where a couple of hundred does make a difference. I suppose for an SG even just hundred fifty off would be nice. I know many small dealers do offer better prices than the big internet or box stores, but they also offer something else -- knowledge and better service for their product. There is a Rickenbacker dealer in New Jersey who not only offers fantastic prices, but he knows EVERYTHING about Rickenbackers, can set up your new Ric so that it will be the best set up guitar on Earth, and his service in dealing with these guitars is exceptional. I'm just wondering if there is a Gibson dealer equivalent.
taxman
Thanks, Charlie. I've seen others mention that shop. May be a good place to look into.
RowdyMoon
I have found that most ma and pa shops tend to be on par price wise with any other store be it small or a box type store.

lazarusvt84
MF has them on sale for $999 You need to follow up here based on your post earlier today on the Gibson Lounge where you said they sent you the wrong guitar. I' much prefer covered pups...they look so much better. Hope MF takes care of you.
taxman
MF has them on sale for $999 Yeah, I saw that. If they can be had for $999 at one place, you can get them for that price at any place (price match). MF is cool, but I'd prefer a shop that is primarily a Gibson dealer. I know of Gretsch and Rickenbacker shops, wonder why there are no Gibson ones?
SG MEN
Yeah, I saw that. If they can be had for $999 at one place, you can get them for that price at any place (price match). MF is cool, but I'd prefer a shop that is primarily a Gibson dealer. I know of Gretsch and Rickenbacker shops, wonder why there are no Gibson ones? Well i think one reason that you are not finding a ton of small shop Gibson dealers is because they require a shop to buy $250,000 a yr in guitars and product AND....THEY (the factory)DECIDES WHAT INVENTORY YOU WILL RECEIVE! Might as well just buy your SG Burst and enjoy it cuz although we like things to be optimum in our lives, some times you just got to get on to having fun regardless of how you get there to do it!!!! Within reason i mean. LOL!
taxman
I started this thread on October 11th looking for a nice deal on a Gibson SG. Well, a month later I found a great deal and look what arrived today. Can't open it until Christmas, but I am patient. I was patient in looking for a nice price for an SG; now I'll be patient in waiting to open that box.
kidblast
So, don't look at the sam ash web site then.. ($799 for the SG Standard Limited) DOH!
taxman
So, don't look at the sam ash web site then.. ($799 for the SG Standard Limited) DOH! Dude, I got that price beat. Basically I paid close to $500 less for what the price of a Standard SG was going for! I definitely took advantage of these Gibson blow out sales going on, and then I pushed the salesman for some more off. He bit, and I am more than happy with the price I paid for a brand new (made in September 2012) Gibson SG Standard. That $799 price from Sam Ash can be lowered if you just ask them to lower it. Never pay the price they are asking for a guitar. You tell them lower it some more, and they will.
Duffy49
Dude, I just got a new heritage cherry Gibson SG Standard and it is a very nice guitar. Very well built and it has a high gloss mirror finish, which I like a lot better than those satin finishes on the SG's. The 490/498 pickups sound great thru a clean channel on my Marshall JMD1. There are no gaps along the neck between the neck and binding, as has been reported by some, and the overall quality is really high. I hope you get a real nice one, like I did. These guitars are light and awesome. The neck on mine is definitely "far" from being a baseball bat - quite thin actually, but I don't think it is the real thin one that they have made before, but I could, of course, be wrong. It plays very effortlessly and feels great.
taxman
Dude, I just got a new heritage cherry Gibson SG Standard and it is a very nice guitar. Yeah, the blowout prices on the Standard SG are really making these things sell. Heck, everyone on guitar forums seems to be buying one. How can you not? If I didn't just buy one a week ago, I'd be buying one. Mine is still sitting in a box. I hope the Gibson quality (lack of) control bug did not hit mine. Sucks buying a guitar online that you can't inspect and play; but the price and the precise model I wanted made me buy. I don't mind baseball bat necks. I have some beefy, rounded necks that I find a hell of a lot easier to play than my super slim neck on my Ovation guitar. Really looking forward to Christmas so I can crack open my Gibson box and play what's in it. Is your "heritage" Cherry one of the Limited SG finishes? SGgypsyboy
^^^Maybe you should check it in the remote chance of shipping damage? Just look it over and then put it right back up. Just a thought. Because if it is damaged I think there is a time window to report it to the carrier.
taxman
^^^Maybe you should check it in the remote chance of shipping damage? Yeah, I did do that. I turned the lights down real low, opened the case a crack, and checked the headstock. Looked in one piece, closed it up, won't open now till Christmas. It is not just idle time. Between now and Christmas I am getting the guitar ready. New strap, strings, a Gibson book, Gibson polish and cloth...all are ordered or will be Christmas presents.
