j45nick
I was never a big John Denver fan, but he certainly wrote some great songs.
stein
John Denver...yea, I think for the most part, whenever someone puts in the John Denver poeple get a little off-put. Maybe even a little mad. But, check this out: A workmate of mine had an IPOD hooked up at the work site (construction), so I (we) decided to let it run with the John Denver and see how it affected the "mood" of everyone in general. Turns out, while no one really wanted to hear it, after about an hour or so with everyone adjusting to it and getting the songs and music into thier heads, the worksite became a noticably happier place. It was a lot like therapy. I think there is something to it.

duluthdan
This is the famous "1910 Gibson F-Hole Jazz Guitar", according to John Denver, that he wrote the song on. This instrument is currently on display at the Musical Instrument Museum, Scottsdale, AZ. I wonder, is it really a Gibson? I'll grant you that much of his music is simple and "folky" but he sure wrote and recorded a ton of work. Every year about this time there are numerous tribute concerts and get togethers and its pretty fun. For the last 3 years I've gotten together with Steve Weisberg (Christmas For Cowboys)to jam and listen to his stories from the road. Mr. Weisberg is only pro I have ever played with, and though I not even close to the same league he is, we have a blast playing some of John's stuff, and throwing originals back and forth. We will meet up again tomorrow. If you ever do get to Aspen, be sure to take a walk thru the JD Memorial, its kind of humbling. Here's my favorite, though simple, it's message has carried me for many years.
retrorod
Thanks for the reminder and memories, Dan! What a great American-songwriter/treasure that we have lost....
fortyearspickn
I had dismissed John Denver for years as lightweight until I heard "Perhaps Love" which he wrote and recorded a few times. including with Placido Domingo. It is one of my favorite songs. So, when I stumbled across one of his music books that included it - I bought it, and it opened up my eyes. Yes, he didn't write Protest Songs. He didn't really write Folk. Didn't really write Pick Up Truck, Long Neck Country. Not Light Rock. But, "Country Roads", "I'll Walk By Your Side" and "Sunshine On My Shoulders" celebrate the good things in life and project a positive happy outlook. Not that I don't like Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" as well, but a diet of only one type would drive me crazy..er. Thanks for the tribute Dan. Dave F
Always admired his talent and liked a few of his songs but was never a die hard fan. I am a die hard fan of James Burton and was suprised when I read he was with John Denver for quite a few years. If some of you Denver fans can direct me toward some of the Denver / Burton work I'd appreciate it.

James Burton plays on many of the songs, along with Pete Huttlinger who took over lead guitar in JD's band in the 90's.
