'50s necks: how big are we talking here?

I'm nto going to be able to head over to my local guitar shop anytime soon to try it, but one guitar that I've been really digging is a 1958 les paul reissue but the neck size is pretty much the only thing that's making me a little hesitant in going for it. I'm just wondering how big these 50 necks are? is it true that they feel like a baseball bat or is it just exaggeration by some people with small hands?

thanks in advance!

You really need to play one, and not just for a few minutes either. Especially if you're currently playing a modern thin neck guitar. The first time you pick that guitar up, it's going to feel different in a lot of ways.

I love 'em.

Just my $.02

It deppends on what you like more.

I like those baseball bat necks... I can play really good on them... but give me one of those ibanez wizard necks and my playing goes hell, I can't even play power chords on those thin things.

As I said before, its a matter of taste, some like them fat, some like them flat.

The neck is sufficiently larger/thicker than most other guitar necks, that you will certainly need to play it in order to decide if you like it. I own and play many, including the round 50's, but I prefer to avoid it, and don't buy them. If you already know that you are very comfortable with typical, thinner neck profiles, just go for 60's neck LPs and enjoy.

To paraphrase Sir Mixalot..

"I like big necks and I can not lie

You other brothers can't deny

...I like'em round and big

And when I'm throwin a gig

I just can't help myself

I'm actin like an animal

Now here's my scandal..."

Although I must say the '58 neck is pretty big, I prefer the '59 rounded myself.
