While we're on the subject of authenticity vs. created by the PR machine, have a look at these folks:

I especially recommend the "You Ain't Alone" video, which raises the ghosts of Otis and Janis. This girl can sing, and she plays an SG to boot.

female power vocals are making a return. You don't have to look like a supermodel.

They didn't call Willie Mae Thornton "Big Mama" for nuthin'. Aretha ain't exactly skinny as a rail, either.

On the other hand, there was Pearl (JJ), who was a small girl who produced a mighty sound. I remember sitting about 20 feet away from her at a concert thinking the noise coming out of her mouth was loud enough to blow my clothes off. (Of course, I might have been stoned out of my mind at the time, which may have added to the effect)

I saw them a few weeks ago at the Americana Awards with Booker T on keys. They were great. At the end of the show they paid tribute to Levon singing The Weight, and she shared a mic with Emmylou. Good music is alive and well!!!
