SJ200
Hi, I am about to buy a Gibson SJ 200 Custom Elite made in 2011. However, I noticed it only has a 8 digit serial number. Anyone knows why??? Thanks for you help!
j45nick
Well, that would be a standard Gibson Acoustic serial number format, I believe.
SJ200
Well, that would be a standard Gibson Acoustic serial number format, I believe. I m just a little confused cos on the website it says, "NOTE - Gibson USA goes to a 9 digit serial number in early July 2005.. The sixth number is now a batch number- batch 0 starts at the beginning of the day, and once we stamp 699, the batch number will change to 1. The first 5 numbers remain the same, the last 3 numbers will remain the same. The only difference is the addition of this batch indicator. " Does that only apply to electric instead of acoustic? Thx,

Thx, You're right -- "Gibson USA" is generally the electric divisions in Nashville and Memphis. Gibson Montana is somewhat distinct, in that sense, and may have differing protocols for such things as serial numbers. Hope that helps, Fred
EuroAussie
Does it really matter if it has 8 or 9 digits ... ??
BigKahune
Does it really matter if it has 8 or 9 digits ... ?? Yes, 9 digits on a Montana Gibson would indicate a fake Gibson acoustic. Bozemen and Memphis still use 8 digits - YDDDYRRR Gibson USA (Nashville) went to a 9 digit serial number in July 2005 to accomadate their increased production. The sixth number is now a batch number- batch 0 starts at the beginning of the day, and once 699 is reached, the batch number changes to 1. The first 5 numbers and the last 3 numbers still represent the same info. The only difference is the addition of the batch indicator - YDDDYBRRR Another tidbit - acoustic guitars built at Bozeman are ranked from 001-299. Electric Guitars built at the Gibson USA plant in Nashville are ranked from 300-999. Prior to 1984, the numbers 001-499 show Kalamazoo production, 500-999 show Nashville production. The serial numbers from the Custom, Art, and Historic division vary depending on the line. The historic reissue guitars feature historically accurate serial numbers. . BigKahune
. @BBG - This is a feature in Gibson electric electrics. As with anything Gibson, there's always exceptions, but generally, if the model/year being reissued originally had a 6 digit serial, the reissue will have 6 digits. The format would be M YRRRR or MYRRRR, M is the model year being reissued, Y is the production year, and RRRR is the production rank. Here's some good info on the Gibson site - http://www2.gibson.com/Support/Serial-Number-Search.aspx
