The £100,000 guitar

Recommended Posts

I don't know how many of you have seen this delightful item on ebay:

Item number: 230867238247

It is a flame top Les Paul 25 / 50 (never used) with a price tag of £100,000 or $150,000 approx.

Now it is a lovely guitar. My 25 / 50 is a flame top but the advertised one above is undoubtably better I have to admit. In addition, the flame pickguard is superbly matched to the top.

But a hundred grand? Maybe if Jimmy Page had held it between his legs (not that that would persaude me of anything but to get the disinfectant out) but otherwise...?

Opinions anyone?

It is very nice; very very nice, and unique probably having been in storage for so long. But it has no real history. Quite over-valued though. But then there are quite a few over-valued guitars around at the moment. There are 2 original '59 335's on eBay. One is about $30K and the other about $75K. They are both identical. Then there is the factory black 1963 Gretsch Country Gentleman up for $18K.

But someone will buy them.

Has it been 2 months already? Threads on this guitar are regular as clockwork!

It is way overpriced and ugly as F*%k as far as I'm concerned.

Way overpriced yes.

Ugly?

Nah, one of the most beautiful guitars I have ever seen.

That's obviously subjective. Personally I don't like multi-ply binding, flame tops, gold hardware, speed knobs, fat binding in the cutaway, pick guards (especially that one), black pup rings, rear binding, metal nuts or those inlays.

To each his own, of course, that's why I ended my sentence with "as far as I'm concerned".

And I appreciate your "as far as I am concerned" old mate.

It is, as you say, a very subjective matter because I love all the things (or most of 'em) you don't like!

Ha Ha, you're obviously good humoured. Pippy just pointed out to me that in your sig it says you own one of these. I probably wouldn't have said it if I had noticed but there you go, it's out there now, I don't like your guitar! I'm sure you'll get over it though!

That is way overpriced because for that kind of money you can get any number of PAF equipped Gibbys, including a 3 PAF 1959 ES-5 Switchmaster for less than 1/4 that amount and on a good day you could pick up a 1958-60 LP Standard with PAFs.I'd love to see the twit who would blow that kind of money for a 25/50.
