Bob Isaac Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Awesome. I think I need to practice a lot more. Bob
LarryUK Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 I wouldn't say he was a great player. His solo's are quite simple. The Hotel California solo is the perfect example of a melodic solo. No shredding, but so classy. One of the best solo's ever. Do you all agree? Just like EVH 'Beat it' solo. 'Rosanna' solo. All class.
LarryUK Posted October 26, 2012 Author Posted October 26, 2012 As a note. We've not had the discussion on here about structuring a solo. All the young players could learn from it. How do you go about your solo's?
btoth76 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 Hello! Not only great looking, but also a great sounding one! As for solo srtucturing, well, when I have no idea I go with tremolo-picked triads based on diatonic scales. I don't really think that much about them. They come naturally. Sometimes better, but mostly just shredding. I am not a great talent, so to say. Just enjoying playing the guitar... Great post! Great lesson! Thanks! Cheers... Bence

Interesting to see he plays with a capo...why didn't I think of that...so much easier with open chords ! Thanks for posting this..I might even be able to play it properly now.
Rocky4 Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 I wouldn't say he was a great player. His solo's are quite simple. I'm dumbfounded by your comments. I wouldn't call it simple by any means, and I wouldn't consider simple bad. He's a musician. He wrote the solo. That's why he's a guitar player for one of the most popular bands in history. That's what separates the successful players from the wannabes.
Thunderchild Posted October 26, 2012 Posted October 26, 2012 IMHO, Henley & Frye screwed him over. Frye said in an interview once after they fired Felder, that "Walsh was THE lead player for the group." then saw a concert where Steuart Smith was playing all of Felders stuff. Close but lacking soul, haven't listened to them since.

They are not nice boys.
Searcy Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 I've been working on recording a cover of this Don Felder tune and frankly his leads are melodic, lyrical and very deceptive. The guy does these massive bends with so much expressiveness in them that I'm reminded of many great slide players. What a fantastic and overlooked player.

I mean't simple, by the fact that it was tasty and non shred. I hate all the shredding that I see now. This solo is the perfect example of 'simple' and straight forward.

badbluesplayer Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLcL4MkpJQ4&feature=g-all-u Isn't it the best looking Les Paul? Beautiful. I guess I don't feel so bad now. See how when he's showing how to play the lead parts, he doesn't hold the rests long enough. Funny. Just like your average Joe. I guess that's pretty universal.
ZenKen Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 As a note. We've not had the discussion on here about structuring a solo. All the young players could learn from it. How do you go about your solo's? Don gave great advice. Follow the chords changes and use notes in the chords being played. That's a great starting point for inexperienced players.
Dennis G Posted October 27, 2012 Posted October 27, 2012 What a fantastic and overlooked player. His nickname in the Eagles was "Fingers". 'nuff said.
kaleb Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 If you read Felder'a book "Heaven and Hell, My Life with The Eagles" you'll realize just how bad those two screwed over the entire group. They are not nice boys. Frankly, I'm surprised Walsh and Timmy Schmidt are still with the group. I can't stress how much I loathe Henley and Frey. And Don is such a nice guy. It's terrible. Those two are even worse than Simmons and Stanley.
Searcy Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 You mean rock stars are assho1es? That's just bananas.
Tman Posted October 28, 2012 Posted October 28, 2012 Wow, that blew me away. I have always read that Joe Walsh not only wrote the song but wrote and played the solo. This rocked my little Hotel California world. Fabulous

That whole album had some great guitar work on it. (Hotel California)
