aquat26
Hi, I have just ordered a Robert Johnson L-1 from my local dealer. As it's not in stock I've taken a bit of chance by buying it unseen. I would like to hear any opinions or personal experiences you may have/had with this model. In particular I would like to hear about the action. I'm hoping it's nice and low with no buzz. Also I would like to hear about the Aged Vintage Sunburst finish. I have never bought a guitar that has been prematurely aged before. Thanks everyone. j45nick
The action of any Gibson is adjustable, and the guitar can be set up to suit your style of playing. Guitars come from the factory with a "standard" range of action heights, which may or may not be right for you. Your local dealer should have an in-house technician who is experienced in setting up guitars. If you trust him, take advantage of that opportunity. Many dealers will throw this service in for nothing on a new guitar, as they have a vested interest in your being happy with your purchase, With some of my guitars, I haven't been able to put my finger ( ) on what it is about a setup that wasn't quite right for me, but a luthier or good tech can generally spot issues--and fix them--with a minimal amount of time and effort. So getting low action on a guitar like this should be possible without fret buzz?
j45nick
So getting low action on a guitar like this should be possible without fret buzz? All depends on your playing style. The harder you hit the strings, the greater the amplitude of their oscillation, and the more likely you are to get fret buzz for a given action height. This is where neck relief comes in as well, as the amplitude of oscillation is normally the greatest at the midpoint of the string length, I believe. You can't get a combination of low action and a hard-driving strumming style without fret buzz. Fingerpicking, you can often go quite low, depending on how aggressive you are. However, you typically give up some volume with a very low action, so the experts tell us.
527
So getting low action on a guitar like this should be possible without fret buzz? It's possible on any guitar that is properly set up. The model doesn't really matter as long as the neck angle is correct.
