Guest J-Doug
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/Gibson-J-185-Vintage-Sunburst-w-LR-Baggs-pickup-/110965648920?pt=Guitar&hash=item19d6116e18 I showed this one to Mrs.J-Doug this afternoon and didn't get the go ahead (sigh) so I thought I would share. Not a bad price for one of these in Canada. The lowest I've seen one of these go for in Ottawa was $1500+taxes. It's in Ontario near Hamilton. j45nick
J-Doug, you've got the sequence wrong. First you buy it, THEN you show it to the little lady, usually while saying "I got a really good deal on this one, and had to buy it then and there to make sure no one else got it". I usually follow up with "I can always sell it in a couple of years if I don't like it and make some money on it. Hey, want to go out to dinner tonight?" Guest J-Doug
Unfortunately we don't have a dog house so I'd be sleeping on the cold hard ground. :P
merseybeat1963
If I began selling furniture to buy instruments my wife would be all go for that.

Nick, you have this down to a tee, step by step. Ive been following your approach, it works !
J-1854Me
I've actually been to Central Music in Welland a few times -- it's a nice little store with a pretty surprising selection for being in kind of a small town in the Niagara Peninsula! If this is the same one they had back in May, then I played it back then when I visited their store. Time before that, they had a really nice mid-60s J-200 in stock, complete with big adjustable metal bridge insert, and it sounded really nice! You'll see that this J-185 is the non-Maltese cross version, btw. Fred
Guest J-Doug
Fred, if that was the same J-185, how did it sound?
j45nick
Nick, you have this down to a tee, step by step. Ive been following your approach, it works ! I've bought about $20k worth of guitars in the last couple of years using this approach. It does work. Unfortunately, it has also cost me a new $45k car for my wife, an agreement to do her new $50k kitchen, and now two new bathrooms are on her list. Who's the clever one here? j45nick
Yikes! I think you've been had, Nick! Yeah, but I've got some neat guitars out of it. And I would have done the other things for her in any case, since she has a nice way of asking for them. When you have a serious guitar habit, you do whatever it takes to keep them happy..... J-1854Me
Fred, if that was the same J-185, how did it sound? J-Doug: *Assuming* it was the same guitar, it sounded 'all right', not spectacular, but no dog either. I know that won't help a lot, but it was not one that I would have avoided on tonal merits. Welland is a bit of 'backwater' town, so maybe their traffic is a little slow...? Fred
Dave F
I just make sure she doesn't see me when I leave to go somewhere to play. I return with the new one and she's no wiser.

duluthdan
Do like I did, and threaten to sell her piano. Make sure you have a strong wireless router though, so you can get a good signal out here in the doghouse...
