flatbaroque
My friend just saw this documentary on Rodriguez.Detroit Singer songwriter of the early 70's. His album Cold Fact was big in Australia.Full of choice songs, most well known was Sugar Man. He had two critically well received but commercially unsuccessful albums and then virtually disappeared. The doco traces him down and recounts his story.Apparently he was a cult hero in South Africa just through bootlegs of Cold Fact and he didn't even know it. The South African doco makers end up taking him to South Africa for a huge gig.My friend said she really enjoyed it. This arvo I've since learnt how to play Sugar Man properly. Thanks to Mr Interweb. There is a little passing chord between the Am and F that I never could work out....its an augmented something x03220...it makes all the difference..Yippee! Smurfbird
I'm hoping to see the movie as well. Saw him perform on Letterman (should be able to google on You Tube) and he was great. From what I understand, the soundtrack album is the best of the two early 70s albums, Cold Fact and Coming From Reality. I decided to spring for both albums at iTunes with the bonus tracks and I'm not sorry. It's wonderful. Reminds me a little of the feeling I got when I first learned of Nick Drake in the late 1980s. How could someone so soulful and pure be so obscure for so long? It happens.

Yea strange how success happens...he really caught on in Oz, even toured here..it was his only commercial success..why here and South Africa who knows...glad he's had a mini renaissance cause of the doco. don't think this is a spoiler...everyone knows he's still alive.
