Strap Lock Question

Hi All,

I bought some strap locks for my VM Studio and when I took the old buttons off, the one at the neck had the same size screw as the strap locks but the one on the end had a larger screw. The strap lock screw will hold when I insert it in the guitar but I'm afraid it will eventually pull out and let my baby fall. I didn't know if the two different sized screws (that came on my guitar) were standard or if it was a flaw. I've read about trouble with screw size when adding locks to LP's but nothing specific about what the problem actually is. Any information would be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Warren Brown

I think I remember my studio came with different screws... but I bought her used and beaten the hell out of. Dont remember if my standard faded had different screws but I think it did...

Have you checked if the larger screw fits in the straplock hole? you could use it instead of the one that came with the straplock

By the way Warren, welcome to the forum.

heres what you need

-wood glue

-toothpick

put a thin bead of glue on the toothpick and put it in the hole (break off the excess toothpick)then screw the screw in (creating new threads in the toothpick), ive done this on so many guitars i can't count (including my gibby V, which is my baby)

hope i could helpo:)

Thanks! No, the screw won't fit in the hole. I thought about seeing if I could find another one that would but thought I'd ask here first to see if maybe some other brand used larger screws or if they were all pretty much the same. I also thought about using the toothpick and glue method ninety1vee mentioned too. I've used that many a time on other stuff and it seems to do okay.

Thanks again!

The glue oughta work if not try wood filler putty, it's tough as hell and mold well, i used an old guitar pick cut in half as a putty knife and pushed it in deep with a toothpick, using the toothpick hole as a guide for the screw

I modded the stock screw. If you have access to a grinder (bench or handheld) VERY carefully take a little bit of metal off the circumference of the screw head, checking your progress as you go.

This way, the original screw will fit in the straplock button, and no glue/toothpicks are needed.
