Should I use a boost before overdrive or distortion

Recommended Posts

It depends on what you want to do and how you have your amp set. If you have a dirty amp all a boost does in front of the amp is increase gain, to increase volume you need your boost in the loop. If your amp is set cleaner and you want a little 'more' out of your OD then put it in front of the OD to push it harder, if you just want some more volume with your OD then put your boost behind the OD.

Do whichever sounds better to you. Be creative, not imitative.

I run an Zvex SHO in front of my Xotics AC boost give me a nice "tight" signal, and a EHX LPB-1 at the tail of the chain for volume boost.

I eventually want to swap out the LPB for an Xotics EP boost.
