Corrosive sweat...

Anyone have acid for sweat? My son bought some new black nickel pups (SD JBs) and after only two weeks...the top 1/4 inch of the bridge pickup (where he rests his hand) looks worn thru to the steel (i.e.,lost it's 'blackness'). I then felt the top edge of his tune0matic bridge and unlike the smooth bottom side, it feels like sand paper. That explains why he goes through strings like poop goes through a goose.

Or your son just has a high acid content in his sweat...I've got the same problem, I use Elixir's exclusively on all my guitars now. Last at least 2 months before I have to change them. Regular strings last a week if I'm lucky.

Every single watch or chain or guitar I ever had , had the plating eaten away or silver turn black and pitted. Even if I wipe the strings down they still rust. I don't brace or rest my right hand on the guitars at all yet even the finish gets attacked. I wipe off the tuners and the metal parts and just from sweat dripping or just touching them they end up dull and when I try to polish them off they are pitted and or tarnished or dull. Guitar polish does not seem to help at all so I gave up on that. And no I don't take drugs of any kind.

My only Ph-related problem manifests on the bass-side pole-pieces of the bridge pickup. They get rusted. I polish my guitars in every 2-3 months and I also wipe the pickup covers and pole-pieces (and rest of the hardware, even plastics) with the guitar polish-soaken rag. The one I use removes the surface rust and seals the surface for a while.

So, yes, clean the instrument after use, and regularly polish it. Don't be afraid to use the polish (Luthier's Choice, Virtuoso, whatever...) on metallic surfaces as well.

Cheers... Bence
