Spud
I recently bought a LP Studio at a great price and in very good condition. However, I find I have a problem with the tuning on the commonly troublesome G string. I've filed out the nut to relieve any pinching I was experiencing but the problem is that if I hold the A on the 2nd fret of the G string, then it's noticeably sharp throwing out the tuning of say an A or D chord. Any tips for fixing this issue? Do I need to get the string sitting lower in the nut? The tuning further along the G string is fine, it just seems to be sharp at the 2nd fret and my hunch is that the string should sit lower in the nut but I thought I'd ask here first... Thanks! CHH
Looks like nobody else knows either. Did you find a solution? You can find Bryan Kimsey's notes on setup on line, and they answer just about anything on how to approach the nut setup. You might try a different G string. Good luck. Mustache Guitar Repairs
it might be a matter of just adding a little bit of graphite to the nut slot so the string can move freely, or just be the G string itself. if it's out of tune in various places on the fretboard I'd suggest checking the intonation on a good tuner once the action and neck relief is correct and ALL of the slack has been stretched out of the strings. be careful when filing the nut as it's easy to cut the slot too low, causing buzzing when the string is played open. to check if the nut slot is the right depth, fret at the second fret and see how high above the first fret the string is. if there is a small space (around .010"), you're golden. if the string is sitting on the first fret when fretted at the second, you've cut too deep. hope that helps
Freedm
I am having the same issue with my LP Goth. I have taken my guitar to 2 stores. I have had the intonation checked and a graphite nut installed with no help. The second store told me that is how LP's are and you just have to deal with it. NO! This is my 4th LP and I never had an issue with themy other 3...and theyI were allpaying studios....Please help
