Swampy Blues on the Advanced Jumbo

Sort of a follow up to the update about new strings on the AJ.

I changed the Daddario PB's to Martin SP 80/20's as recommended and have been tickled pink, so much I wanted to do a quick video.

I really like how the 80/20's deliver now a more of a sweeter, rounder edge to the tone, especially on the high strings.

Or maybe ....Im just hearing things, but I can tell a differnece.

Here's a clip of some delta blues and the one from a couple weeks ago, sounds sweeter to me with the 80/20's, so big thanks to Jinder and Johnny (love my AK-47) Reb for the tip.

btw: lovin' this fingerpickin journey, whole new world has opened up !

Both best at 720p

I'm a big fan of 80/20s on Rosewood. I try to keep them on my Martin dreads, which are tuned down a half and a whole step. With that drop in tuning most PBs I've tried really drone rather than rumble - if that makes sense. That AJ sounds very nice with the 80/20s.

Given the bass dominance of rosewood Martin dreads I would imagine 80/20's are must for these guitars. As you say Dan, I would imagine PB's would sound particularly 'drone like, good descrption' once the initial sparkle has worn off.

I know on my SWD 80/20's are a must as the overtones need a bit of taming and PB's just dont do that and it gets muddy rather quickly. However the AJ is much more focued and seems to work well with both alloys, but thus far the 80/20's are a real winner me thinks.

Well....I told ya so [thumbup]

Wish you woulda played the same thing with both sets of strings though. But I don't need convincing. I put some Martin SP phospher bronze on mine the other day because they were laying around and already can't wait to rip them back off. I didn't think I would but I'm prob going back to Elixer nanoweb 80/20 for the AJ. I like a bright string personally and they mix well with the AJ.

One question though....do you normally use lights on everything?? I' haven't used a set of lights in years. I'm considering trying lights this time on the AJ. There so lightly built I'm not so sure they need any extra beef to drive the top. I've also heard tell that heavy strings can choke a light built guitar that doesn't need them vrs a stiffer guitar that needs a little drive.

Also how's the string tension? One complaint I do have about the AJ is with mediums the tension is very stiff. More so than my Martins with mediums. Of course setup could play a part in that. If I didn't loose much drive but reduced tension quite a bit I'd be real interested in trying lights on it.

And yes I love my Ak47. We have killed many aluminum cans together, and a few watermelons. If your ever in the area ill give you a 30 round clip and a melon to send to the promise land. If it doesn't put a smile on your face ill eat dirt

Johnny, I went through the whole lights vs medium thing a couple years ago, and have come to the conclusion that lights are the way to go with Gibsons. As you said they are generally lightly braced and dont need the mediums. Most importantly I believe the mediums do choke the top somewhat, especially on rosewood.

So these days all my guitars are on light, although sometimes I did put on medim high E,B strings to get a bit more sparkle.

So, thanks for the tip about the 80/20's that was great advice.

Oh, and I have to admit Ive never held a real gun in my hand, and, actually would prefer to keep it that way. However I do confess to enjoying blowing bodies into pieces and little animals on the Playstation however... [rolleyes]
