Is this guy correct about being worried of location of this strap button ?

Came across this J-185 on the AGF classifieds.

The potential buyer is concerned where the strap button was placed, I have to admit I cant blame him. Never seen it there but it feels like its a crack just waiting to spread. Plus it looks awful, why would anybody install it there ....am I missing something ??

It's not ideal, even if you're Paul McCartney.....

For a righty player, it should be located in about the 1:30 o'clock position on the base of the neck, like so:

IMHO.

So, 'no', you're not missing anything.

Fred

Well thats a relief Fred. I actually keep mine exactly in the spot you suggest.

I'm not a fan of this location for a strap button, but before you panic too much, take a look inside with an inspection mirror and find out what's going on inside. You may well find there's a block mounted inside for the screw to bite into, reinforcing the area, giving adequate material for the screw to bite into and spreading the load. The Chinese Guild line of guitars have strap buttons mounted along these lines.

If you can see the screw sticking through unsupported then it's an accident waiting to happen, but it can still be reinforced easily enough.

Jayy I'm not sure it would matter what was going on in there. The neck is a solid piece of wood and its the best and safest place to put a strap button. My opinion anyway. I'm not a fan of holes drilled into the side of my guitar. I read of people drilling sound ports and such too? Who in the right mind would even consider that

Big K did you have it installed there? Just curious what thought went into this?

This is the first one ive seen like it. I've have a guitar apart and I mean the wood is quite thin. The screw for the strap button is 3/4 to an inch you would need a nice size block as I'm sure half an inch goes into the area. Seems scary.

Dies the guitar hang better from there?

I agree, the neck is a far better place to locate a strap button, and I can see no benefit to mounting into the side. In fact, fitting a block is considerably more work than fitting a heel mounted button. But it is structurally sound to do so as long as there is a reasonable sized block into which the screw is drilled. The Guilds are fitted with buttons mounted in this style from the factory.

The button was installed at the factory in that position. Take a look at this page and you'll see most if not all the have the button in that location. My favorite location - hangs great. Here's a pic of CO/CV model with a button block. BTW, that's Guild's new PAF carbon fiber neck block - neck angle adjustable

My F412 has a traditional neck block and joint.

That reinforcement block for the strap button screw seems totally out of character with the rest of the internal reinforcement: different wood, not integrated well with the other reinforcement, etc.

It doesn't change the fact that there is a lot of loading concentrated in a small area.

I can see this mounting location in a semi-hollow guitar with a solid center block, such as the ES 335, or on an acoustic guitar with a massive neck block. Otherwise, it doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I just looked at the inside of all my acoustics, and on none of them is the neck block large enough to accommodate this screw location without additional internal reinforcement.

On good thing about screwing into the neck heel is that it is very easy to fill and blend in the repair should you decide to remove the strap pin in the future. Much easier than patching a screw hole in the side of the guitar.
