Amp Advice to Christmas Gift

Recommended Posts

You might remember, I am an acoustic guy the got a Les Paul CC about a year ago. I have be running it through a little VOX AC4 TV, and also a little Fishman acoustic amp. Mostly I like fairly clean sound guy, but I want it to definitely sound "electric". I'm strictly an amateur at home player.

Anyway, the deal from the family is that for Christmas I can buy a somewhat bigger amp (maybe 15-30 watt range), and spend maybe $500-800.

Looking for advice on what makes and models might be good.

Thanks for your ideas.

First hello.... Any way with a budget of 500-800 bucks you can get a kick *** amp!!! Personaly I like tube amps. You cant go wrong with a fender amp. Marshal are very good for more of a metal sound. But both are very good. As for models. That depends on you. There are a buch of amps out there with all kinds of SOUND settings, ie built in effects and such. They can be fun to play around with but take time to get the feel. Most tubes amps are very simple. You might want to look at these models.

http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2232200000 I like this one its more geard towards blues and rock...

This is a soild state but its the one I would get....http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2300040.

There are others but for me I would go with Fender or Marshal.... My plan is to get this for myself this winter(I plow snow for $$ for new toys)http://www.zzounds.com/item--FEN2220000...

Any way your going to have amerry xmas...

That Fender Blues Deluxe sure looks good.

I was thinking about how to describe the sound I want, and it would be clean country style rhythm guitar.

Having said that, would the Blues Deluxe hit the mark? I'm thinking it's very close.

Other options?

One feature you may want to consider is a power selector switch. Not all amps have them. 25 to 40 watts is a lot for a bedroom player. Unless you have a real forgiving wife, you'll be having trouble getting it low enough and still having any kind of tone. My Vox is a 60 watt, but the power switch lets me set it to 30, 15 or 1. I have it set on 1 for bedroom playing. This lets me have the volume up a bit so I can still drive the preamp tubes a little, but the power amp is not pushing much. If I was never going to play out, I wouldn't buy anything over 25 watts.

Hello! I have a pair of 25-watts tube amps, and a pair of 8-watts tube amps. I use them in pairs for stereo effect. Even if I use only one of the 8-watts Regents, I can't turn the volume above 2-3. It would shake the windows above that. Cheers... Bence

Danner,

For clean country rhythm I think Fender, or the various Fender clones on the market, are going to be a good place to start your search. For bedroom playing I would recommend the Blues Jr over the Blues Deluxe. The EL-84 power section has a bit more twang to it than the 6L6 power section of the blues deluxe. Both models have a master volume that will allow you to make the volume bedroom friendly. Another route I would consider would be the '65 Princeton Reverb or '65 Deluxe Reverb reissues. Both have decent clean head room and the reverb pan in both sound better and is more usuable than the reverb on the Blues Jr.

Good info, thank you.

I did read somewhere that the Blues Delux is pretty close to full power at 3-4 on the volume, and that 4-10 mainly affect the drive effect. So, that might be an issue for me. I can play in a fairly large living/dining area, but that amp might be dominating the whole house.

I will look at the Junior and other amps you suggested.

Again, thanks for the good info, it's very helpful.

Have you looked at any of the new modeling amps that Fender has (Mustang Series)

I have Mustang III, it's a very cool amp, has everything one could ever need,

a host of built in effects, 11 amp models, (all VERY well done) built in tuner, and with the optional 4 button foot switch, in tandem with the provided two button foot swithc it's a gas. I have three heavy duty tube amps, this wont replace them, but it's got a lot in a small compact package for 300 bucks. for something to use around the house, or even take to a jam or gig,,, very versatile..

I know you're talking a tube amp, and they're great to have but maybe something worth looking at.

Another option might be the Hughes & Kettner Tubemeister 36 (there is also a lower power 18watt version).

http://www.hughes-and-kettner.com/products.php5?id=148&prod=TubeMeister%2036%20Head

Variable power options from 1 watt up to 36 watts and all tube. Two channels, recording option and midi controllable if you need it.

You will need a separate speaker cabinet though.

EDIT: It seems that a combo version of the 36 is also available.

You can keep that amp on low volume and still get a great crunch or what ever..... PLUS it looks very KOOL!!!.....JUST DO IT!!!!

I own a Blues Deluxe and love it, but had a Tweed Blues Junior prior. Although I'm a big fan of the Deluxe, it is loud. Moore of a gigging amp than the Jr. They are both really fine amps, but I concur with the others that you would be happier with the Junior.

Other options: an Egnator combo, or Orange Tiny Combo or Micro Terror w/ 1x12 cab. Do you own any pedals?

For 500-800 bucks, I would DEFINITELY be looking at used. 2 reasons: your budget really limits how good you can get new, and resale. Because you might want to be upgrading sooner than later.

If you want a lifetime amp, you might spring the extra for a Silverfaced Deluxe Reverb. That amp will not only do exactly what you describe you want, but it will do it in the house OR at a gig equally well.

Just ordered a Mustang 111. I just had to give this a try. And the prices just went way down!!!! Should be a fun new toy!!!

not to hijack Danners thread, but voxman, this amp is the bomb.

I have it sitting right next to my Marshall and Goldtone ga30rvs rigS in my stuido, switching between these amps ok, this wont obsolete my tube amps, but, if your jaming to backing tracks or what ever, the subtleties you notice when you are comparing ts to one of the tube combos, are not noticeable when your jaming. it'a a blast.

You should consider the 4 botton foot switch too. with the two foot switches (2+4) you have infinite control over the programs and settings, once you get your "sounds" dialed and accessible via the FootSwtich, it makes a quite impressive rig, it's very versatile.
