jdgm
Hi all I love a good flanger. My go-to flangers are the MXR 117 re-issue (which is as good as the original and I know because I had 2 of 'em) and the Ibanez SCF10 which is 8-bit digital AND a great pedal. So now I just scored a Montgomery Appliances Flanger '77 Model IV, serial 001. Here it is next to the standard-sized SCF10 for comparison - Probably the biggest single effects pedal I've ever seen! Controls for Threshold/Manual/Range/Rate/Depth(fbk)plus a master volume (unity gain at 2 o'clock). Right switch is on/off, left switch is odd/even harmonics. Here's the lowdown I've found so far - Montgomery Appliances 'is' pedal builder David Gill from Montgomery County, Maryland. He now makes very interesting-looking fuzz and dist. boxes, but previously he did a run of some 50 flanger pedals (which he describes as 'grueling') based on the A/DA circuit. This is version 4. The A/DA flanger itself has been re-issued and also still on the market with very similar features is the HomeBrew FrostBite. The Montgomery flanger uses a Moosapotamus/oldschoolanalog board; Standard 9v psu, ramped up to 18v internally. I am not gonna touch those trimpots! Here is the link to Moosapotamus; http://moosapotamus.net/index.html probably some of the pedal-building forum members already know this site. This is not a set-and-forget pedal! I've spent several hours with it in tweaker's paradise and the level of interaction between the controls is such that a very small adjustment will completely change the sound - here on test with the Dub Dark Cloud; I have to say as there is no legend on the pedal I am not yet sure which knob is which of the 3 left ones! After a half day I am getting some excellent sounds, it's funky, chewy and swirly, lovely dark thick growly chords; I found settings with a very musical 'burr' and the odd/even harmonics switch doubles the audio options, subjectively cutting or boosting the bass on some settings and getting honking midrange and boxy squawks on others, plus plenty of sonic seasickness and other modulatory madness. Will it replace my MXR which I know so well and love? Er, no or at least not for now...it's so big I can't close the pedalcase lid! I'm not on Soundcloud yet but hope to get that sorted soon. This was from eBay and not a bargain but not too much either - I missed the Mesa Bottle Rocket at £91, though...that was a good price....distortion pedals..GAS! And I also fixed up someone's '77 Fender Mustang Bass last week, new machine head, string ferrules, clean-up, restring and set-up...not quite a Gibson Forum topic! Regards to all! Dub-T-123
AWESOME. The builder posts on a few other forums I read so I'm familiar with his stuff and it's all great but this is the creme de la creme Enjoy it!
kaleb
I love a good flanger, especially the A/DA style ones. This is Pat Travers/Pat Thrall galore. They do a pretty good Alex Lifeson circa-Permanent Waves effect too. Not really for EVH style stuff though: the MXR rules for that. Another sound I like to get is the KISS/Ace Frehley "Rocket Ride" rhythm sound.
bonzoboy
With all these controls you should be able to dial up any kind os flanger sound.Congrats on getting a great pedal.I have an original Electro Hamonix Electric Mistress which I bought new in 1976 when they first came out.I also have an Ibanez DM 1000 Digital Delay which has a flanger function and it's really great but I'd certainly like to get my hands on one of these puppies. daveinspain
I remember the bass player that was in a band I worked with back in the 70's used a Morley phase shifter pedal. looked like a volume pedal and it sounded great with his bass... And the intro to 'Somebody Calling' on R Trower's 'In City Dreams'. @Daveinspain - 'I remember the bass player that was in a band I worked with back in the 70's used a Morley phase shifter pedal. looked like a volume pedal and it sounded great with his bass...' Still got one of those, the Tel-Ray Morley PFV(?)! And it still works although it doesn't auto-sweep any more. The Morley PFL flanger pedal and Rotating Wah Vol.(RWV)of the same era sounded almost exactly the same. I even had a 'Bigfoot' Power Amp pedal for a short time but that was too crazy...These days the 'no-pots-to-wear-out' thing doesn't cut so much ice as those tiny bulbs wear out too. I have a Morley stereo vol. pedal to sell, IMO there's not enough sweep/travel. Cheers folks!
