Thanksgiving Day!

With Thanksgiving Day around the corner, I thought it might be cool to hear what some are cooking up. I know that turkey is traditional. Growing up, mom always baked a stuffed turkey.

I have for several years now alternated between smoked or fried turkey. This year we will smoke it. I will smoke a Boston butt as well. I will put that on the top rack so that the juice drips down over the turkey. Self-basting ,in a way [thumbup]

Its a 2-day event with marinating and rubbing the meat a day in advance. The actual cooking will take 10-12 hours. Its all worth it though.

Will whett the appetite with oysters in the shell and some shots of Gentleman Jack [wink]

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. It centers me and makes me remember that I have much to be thankfull for! No pressure....just family and food!

Anyone else care to share?

same thing at Christmas too, except instead of spaghetti, it's a big pan of Waikikii(sp?) meatballs.

I have an aunt who is a caterer. So our whole family always goes to her house and she just makes the most awesome food, but she mixes it up every year, so I'm not sure exactly what we'll have. I do know however, that I will have miller lite and football, football is as necessary to Thanksgiving with the family as turkey.

what, it's Thanksgiving already???? Didn't we JUST have Labor day? what the heck???

[rolleyes]

My wife Debbie is an amazing chef, so many things come out of our kitchen during the holidays.

There's two things that have to be included other than the Traditional Thanksgiving menu items,

one is the homemade ravioli (handmade with an old school style pasta machine) always perfect, the other is a pork meat stuffing that is tremendous beyond words

also been making a sweet potato praline side dish last few years, it's magnificent.

Ahh the holidays! Love this time of year, but it sure comes quick after summer is over.

First Thanksgiving in the new Atomic Ranch with the new wife. With our Brady Bunch and guests there will be 8 of us. Penny claims to be a horrible cook (I disagree). We'll muddle through it! At least in the new house we have plenty of room. The 1970s colonial maple dining room set seats 6 and a couple of us can migrate to the living room if need be.

Usual routine this year. Coming home from school for the rest of the week, spending Thursday up my aunt and uncle's house with the family. The menu's homemade everything, including slow-cooked turkey, mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes with the little marshmallows cooked in, green beans (home grown by my grandpa, as organic as you can get), 2 types of stuffing, artichoke bake, baked stuffed mushrooms, carrots, cranberry sauce, gravy, and my aunt's homemade bread. Dessert will be apple pie, strawberry-rhubarb pie, choc-cream pie, pumpkin pie, apple-raspberry pie, and some baked stuff from my grandparents. All in all, way more than enough for the 15-20 people who will come and leftovers for days and days.

And of course, enough red wine to help put us into the turkey coma afterwords B) Damn...might start fasting now after re-reading this

This will be the first Thanksgiving with my mom in a while. Living in different states we usually reserve time at xmas since that is a better/easier time to see family. Mom is driving down from Michigan and my wife's brother will come over. We talked about a turkey until my mom said she'll bring lamb chops. Not sure what else will be on the menu, but I suggested red mashed potatoes and my wife wants brussel sprouts cooked with bacon and caramelized onions. Dessert will be my mom's famous coconut cream pie and a pumpkin pie.

My son turns one this weekend so we're having a small party on Saturday. He's half Korean so it's a huge deal. We'll have a dohljabi table setup and everything. Should be fun.
