Motherofpearl
I'm about to get my first vtg guitar a 1950 j45. Anybody recommend me a decent case? Will the standard j45 case fit the 1950? Jamie
j45nick
A new J-45 case should fit just fine. My '48-'50 J-45 has slightly different dimensions and proportions than the current one (very minor differences, possibly just the result of aging), but the stock, new Gibson-branded J-45 case I bought for it last year fits it like a glove. I'm not actually using the stock case now, as I found a repro Cali Girl (tan/pink) case I like better. I'm saving that "spare" J-45 case for the vintage orphan SJ or OJ that I expect will end up on the doorstep of Nick's Home for Wayward, Abused, and Neglected Guitars someday...... When you get it, I would be very interested to exchange PM's with you about the FON and certain details.
Lars68
I keep my 1942 J-45 in a tan/pink Gibson case (the one that sells with the J-45 True Vintage). The guitar fits like a glove. I also have the standard J-45 case for another guitar. This case is a good fit too, but perhaps not quite as tight. Lars
zombywoof
Hearing all the questions and concerns when somebdy gets their first old guitar always brings a bit of a smile to my face. It is like being a parent for the first time. Hate to admit it but right now I am keeping my Banner J-50 in an older Wasburn archtop case. Like J45Nick, though I tend to snag cases when I come across a nice one at a bargain price. The Martin dread cases really are a bit frustrating. The interiors are just a tad too small for J guitars. You can get them to fit though by compressing the padding. I kept my 1950s SJ in one for years and it survived just fine. If you want a new case go check out Sweetwater's Case Finder. Neat feature. But as long as the case has a 16" lower bout it will probably work.

Motherofpearl
Btw ya zomby it is some what like having a child. I don't know how to treat it ? To be delicate or what not. I would love a Cali girl case but they are real expensive.

Motherofpearl
This is all I got. Ill have better ones once I get it. Anyone know why someone would take the burst off?
zombywoof
Got to ask - are you sure it is not a J-50? Hard to tell from pics but it does, however, look like the binding has been scraped which would indicate a refinish.
j45nick
This is all I got. Ill have better ones once I get it. Anyone know why someone would take the burst off? Looks nice. I would say the whole guitar has been re-finished (except maybe the neck), not just the top. The grain of the body looks too open for an original finish, which would fill the grain completely. That might be a replacement bridge as well, as most of these rectangular bridges I have seen have a slot-through saddle, rather than a drop-in. Might have been re-fretted as well, as I'm not sure when they started using that fret style. In general, this looks like a really, really nice player-quality guitar. Motherofpearl
It is a new bridge sorry comes with the original though. And zomby it is a j45 100%. I got it for a good value IMO. The fretboard has been replaced or whatever they do aswell. To be honest this is what I truly wanted a solid vtg player. Who knows maybe in the future ill invest 6-8 on an original but for now it's a trial. When I get it ill update with better pics and maybe you guys can help me out to know more about it. zombywoof
Oooh, that does look like a Sovereign sitting behind it.
Lars68
My 1942 J-45 has a bridge with a " drop-in" saddle. The bridge is a left-over late style J-35 bridge. The only other guitar from the same batch as mine I have seen (on the Banner Registry site) also has a J -35 style bridge, although with a through saddle, so most likely Gibson ran out of 45-style bridges and used what they had available. http://images.yuku.com/image/pjpeg/2053552ec3df018fc1c8ee0def32a37b458a626.jpg Lars
