Smurfbird
I was once told by Martin that if I sent an old guitar to them for work to be done that they would not ship it until Spring, due to the cold. Should this be a good rule for everyone? Extreme weather would seem to be a bad thing for guitars and I dread the idea of a valuable instrument sitting in a freezing mail warehouse and being shuttled onto the truck in 30 degree or worse weather... Can you ship guitars in winter? I'm thinking of buying and selling...thanks!

Lots of info on the internet on this topic.

Smurfbird
I'm toying with selling my 2007 Hummingbird. I've fallen in love with the J-200 and I want to get a little 12-fretter to go with the JB I'm caretaking...
Motherofpearl
Ah the JB that one has given me mixed emotions. When I get home from work I got a brand new guitar waiting for me.
duluthdan
I had a J-45 shipped from Minnesota to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado last February with nary an issue. Shipped from a well known guitar store, Willie's, arrived at my office in 3 days, sat untouched in my office for the better part of 2 hours, then sat untouched in the case for 4 hours. It was hard to wait, but wait I did, and when I opened that case up I let everything warm up for another good hour, then tuned it up a whole tone low and played it. That nitro will craze faster than a jack rabbit on a date if you open it too early.
duluthdan
Minus 30 C ? That's like minus 20 Fahrenheit ! I'd vote for an overnight wait too. Mine was shipped at 10 degrees, got here at 20 degrees, no idea what its overnight experience was. I am having a new guitar shiped from Bozeman today at 4,700 feet to me at 8,000 feet. I wonder if that change inside of 2 or 3 days matters. Hmmm. Minus 30, that's severely cold. Yep, overnight.
merseybeat1963
Mother..thats damn cold. My Lowden was ready in late June 2010...some complications with Fed Ex & Braz wood delayed it...and it had to be shipped UPS from Ireland..in July ..it was hot as can be here. Got to my door with a $679 Customs charge...and in a few days I saw two stress checks in the finish on the back. It developed a few more in next year or so..but seems to be ok now. Unless it is shipped overnight like Acoustic Vibes did my last guitar(great store)..Id wait till milder weather.
Smurfbird
And here I thought 20-30 degrees Fahrenheit was pushing it!
Motherofpearl
It was shipped from 5 hours away. Been inside now for almost 8 hours not sure I might wait a bit. That's terrible Mersey I've shipped in the cold months before without issue.

That's terrible Mersey I've shipped in the cold months before without issue. When I saw that, I tried not lose heart..and prayed a crack would not appear in the wood. It was like 97 and humid when it got here. I reasoned if it did happen the guitar is wonderfull anyway. A good amount of stretch marks on the back but its still ok thank God.
