kaleb
One is geniuses making a great parody and the other is morons making a parody of themselves. Do the math. I'm waiting for the "Goofballs Of Rock" tour: Ace Frehley and Nigel Tufnel.
Dub-T-123
Spinal Tap. Gimme Some Money and Big Bottoms are solid jams. I don't want an argument, but I think Kiss sucks.

Guest Farnsbarns
Spinal Tap is funny. Kiss is comical. I think you're being very kind. Kiss is a business, nothing more. I can't think of a more cynical, money grabbing band.

Searcy
I don't see Kiss as being any more commercial, comical or cynical than Elvis, Nickelback or Taylor Swift. I think the main reason they are so widely hated is because of their success.

Perhaps nowadays they are talked-about much more frequently in the States than they are over here. And yes, It's sad, but there is always going to be a certain number of folk who dislike other peoples' successes. Admittedly not many in my present-day circle of friends are devout Kiss fans but back in the day they were very, very popular amongst we lads. As far as showmanship goes - Jimi Hendrix anyone? It's been said many times by many folk - 'That's why they call it showbiz! : Making a Business out of putting on a Show.' P.

I think the main reason they are so widely hated is because of their success. Yup, all businesses first and foremost and I dislike them all for it. Not that it's wrong per se. It just takes away from the music for me. The Beatles are another prime example. Just my opinion and perception. On the other hand there are few as successful as Led Zep but I feel they went about it differently. Again, just my feelings, I can't help them. rct
And Kiss; are they widely hated? I didn't know. Perhaps nowadays they are talked-about much more frequently in the States than they are over here. They really actually aren't widely anything. We happen to have a fan of them here, so they are on that fans mind and at the ends of his hands while typing. I would venture a guess that the average Amerukkin, if asked about KI55, would respond with "...they still around?". If I typed as much about the bands I love, you might think Southern Rock was filling arenas here in 2012. It isn't, only in my head and memory is it important. And there isn't anything wrong with that at all. rct
dbreslauer
found this humorous link: The Fine Line Between Stupid and Clever: KISS vs. Spinal Tap quote: "It's March of 2000. I'm at a KISS concert at the Arrowhead Pond of Anaheim (now Honda Center). The band launches into the opening riff of their classic song "Love Gun". Lead singer Paul Stanley is hooked up to a contraption designed to lift him twenty-five feet in the air and "fly" him to a smaller stage set up in the middle of the crowd. Halfway through the journey, though, something goes awry and instead of landing on the stage Paul gets stuck and is left swinging back and forth over the audience.[1] Not wanting to abort the song, Gene Simmons takes over the lead vocals but even after twenty years, Gene has somehow never memorized the lyrics to "Love Gun." So now we have Paul swinging around helplessly, Gene butchering the vocal, and Peter Criss nearly falling off his drum stool he's laughing so hard. Ace Frehley, as usual, is completely oblivious." EVOL!
I don't see Kiss as being any more commercial, comical or cynical than Elvis, Nickelback or Taylor Swift. I think the main reason they are so widely hated is because of their success. I disagree. Yes, Elvis was full on commercial and comical during the Vegas years, but the man never lost his absolute love of singing and performing. Can't really comment on the other two in your list. My issue with Kiss is there absolute worship of the all mighty dollar over everything else. They'd lip sync and play to backing tracks if it made one dollar more than actually performing or writing new material. Marketing is an essential part of being a successful band because you have to establish your brand. But you also have to have the music to back it up or you're just pedaling tchotchkes. Marketing is an essential part of being a successful band because you have to establish your brand. But you also have to have the music to back it up or you're just pedaling tchotchkes. I couldn't agree more. I love KISS. But ever since the faux Farewell Tour, it's been a parody and a tribute band. Full on nostalgia. I understand marketing, but the over-excessive merchandising is just plain stupid. Being at my local Hastings looking for a movie to rent and crossing by a shelf of KISS games drives me away from the band. And the records (live records included) that they've done since the Reunion in 96' don't get me off at all. And this is coming from a guy who even likes The Elder and their 80s non-makeup glam records. Elvis and The Beatles are the exception. They are iconic figures for the impact they made and their music. KISS isn't like that (although Gene would proudly defend himself). I mean, their makeup is recognizable and distinctive (unless you're in Japan), but musically, they're just like any other band. Although bands like Rush, UFO, and Thin Lizzy are the biggest thing in the world in my brain, they're not iconic in the real world. Michael Jackson is an iconic figure (although I still think he was all entertainment). The way I see it, KISS is just like Aerosmith, AC/DC, or Rush (excluding the obvious musical differences). A band. Gene doesn't want it that way. He wants everyone to like on Planet KISS. Well, that ain't gonna happen. If they focused on the true essense that KISS was from the beginning (backing up catchy, ballsy rock n' roll with a great show you'll never forget) rather than putting their name on everything, it would be great. It ruined them in 1979 and it's ruining them now. Frankly, they should go see Alice Cooper again. He's doing great. And that humorus link is where I got the idea for this thread!
