Looking for that competitive edge.

I recently got a singer and a bassist for a full band. The problem is that we're good, but we don't have that wow factor. I want some help in converting a song to barre/power chords. I don't know if I could do it on my own, but I think this would leave crowds, especially at the kinds of shows we all go to, simply stunned, or just laughing and having a good time. And, we're all a funny bunch, so I figured we could have some hilarious memories. I may be out sick tomorrow, so I may be able to work on this first thing in the morning. I'm just looking for guidance for this band competition. (January 5th) I almost want this to be a secret weapon.

Thanks.

While this is a nice version of the song, I'm more or less looking for help rebuilding it from the ground up.

Lol yeah I didnt expect you to do it the same.. it was all just ideas to try and help you on the way [thumbup]

You may.

Seriously, though; many of my all-time favourite Pop songs are ABBA tracks. Just fantastic music IMHO.

Yeah I agree.. I got into it cos of my age (born in the early 70s).. I am the youngest in my family and have two older sisters who listened to Disco a lot and that ilk of music and I used to borrow their records. And a lot of people just dismiss ABBA as cheesy pop.. And as much as it is cheesy and is pop, its also some of the best written music I know.. They way they layer and construct it is amazing.

One of my best nights I had with another guitar playing friend was when we put on ABBA Gold and sat there both playing along too the tracks.. Such great fun :) And when you play along you get a reall appreciation of how the music has been written.

And SOS is one of my fave tracks of any band.

As for ideas on how to play it..

Firstly just work out the rough chords (obviously :)).

Then I would approch it maybe one of two ways.. Either take it as heavy as your band will go and chug the verses maybe with some lead twiddling here and there and then go to full out power chords for the chorus (Sorta Metallica or Foo Fighetrs like).. (simple is often best)

OR... Start with an acoustic to build up to the full band and a wailing lead solo (while keeping the acoustic in) ;)

As I say, all just ideas.. One usually leads to another.

Okay, laugh at this if you will, but "competition" among bands isn't just about the book. It's not even about skill as long as a band is together.

I saw an interview with Benny (from ABBA) when the musical 'Mamma Mia' was about to be launched.

He recalled some of the comments he received durings the band's carreer which came from seemingly unlikely sources.

Jimmy Page was a bit of a fan, it seems, but the message which most floored Benny was from Pete Townshend when S.O.S. had been released as a single (1975).

It said that Pete had just heard the track on the radio; got a copy ASAP and wrote to ABBA's record company to say he thought it probably the best Pop song ever written. To put this in time-context, this was not long after The Who had released 'Quadrophenia', 'The Who By Numbers' and the film of 'Tommy'...

I was actually thinking something along the lines of powerchord palm mutes, then at the end of the verse open bars, then full open powerchords for the chorus.
