Rabs
So I got some more info on this new Hendrix Album.. From this article http://www.rollingstone.com/music/videos/jimi-hendrixs-engineer-cues-up-people-hell-and-angels-single-somewhere-20121127 For years, record engineer and producer Eddie Kramer had a front-row seat to the genius of Jimi Hendrix. As the guitar idol's right-hand sound man, Kramer engineered Hendrix's classic Electric Ladyland and served as the director of engineering at the musician's state-of-the-art Electric Ladyland studios. As he explains in this clip, their recording space was where Jimi truly felt at home. "In '68 and '69, Jimi was in the studio constantly," recalls Kramer. "His whole life was in the studio." In this interview, Kramer reminisces about the experimental vigor that fueled Hendrix in his final days as he began recording his next album. The previously unreleased recordings comprise People, Hell and Angels, out March 5th. Kramer is also excited to cue up the lead single, "Somewhere," a track that features Stephen Stills and drummer Buddy Miles and displays a particularly bold usage of Hendrix's soulful guitar squall. "That's a fantastic example of Jimi's amazing control of the wah-wah [pedal], the tone of the wah-wah – how that affects the whole song," he enthuses. So I decided to have a look and see if I can find it.. And what I found was there is a demo of a song out there called Somewhere. Whats interesting is if you check out the above link they play a bit of the one thats on the new album and it does seem like a totally different take (with added Wah). So this new album could actually be interesting with unheard takes of stuff we have heard dodgey demos or alternate versions of in the past. This is the track thats already out there http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJwML8CHlpQ
CoreyT
They played around one minute of Somewhere the other day on KISW, a local rock station. I liked what I heard.
bonzoboy
The song "Somewhere" wouldn't happen to be another version of his song "Somewhere Over The Rainbow",would it? I see hands, fingers and shades of faces, Reachin' up but not quite touchin' the promised land. I hear dreams and prayers and frustrated whispers sayin' "Oh Lord! Please give us a helping hand." Would these be the lyrics of the first verse? Re Jimi's wah wah pedals: Jimi used almost exclusively Vox Clyde McCoy wah wah pedals and some were modified by my friend and Jimi's electronics wizard Roger Mayer, which gave some of the wah effect on some of his recordings such a unique tone.Roger also designed Jimi's Octavio and the subsequent Octavia.BTW Roger has made it very clear that the pedal that's currently being marketed by Dungplop as the Jimi Hendrix Octavio pedal is basically a copy of a prototype of the Octavio precursor of the Octavia that Jimi eventually used on his recordings and in concert.Roger also modded some of Jimi's Univibe pedals. In order to capture the real Octavia sound one would have to buy one of the pedals that Roger is still marketing as the wedge Octavia or the version of the original Octavio he designed and constructed. You can check out his excellent products here: http://www.roger-mayer.co.uk Mayer products aren't cheap at over $300 U.S. for the Octavio and Octavia but you are essentially buying a piece of musical history. Yes,,, that is exactly what it is. Controversy aside, Crash Landing, for me, was an awesome album.
bonzoboy
Crash Landing was in fact a great album, the intro to Somewhere... is just fabulous.I haven't played that album for so long that I forget all the tracks that were on it and I get it mixed up with another one that came out around the same time-it was called Midnight Lightening. One of them had a Studio version of a song based on Hey Baby-New Rising Sun,called Hey Gypsy Boy and the guitar intro to it with just a Strat played clean through a Leslie,is just spell binding.I use this intro to Hey Baby-New Rising Sun now rather than the original intro to it as heard on Rainbow Bridge.
