bknow77
how do i understand if i have a maple top or a mahogany one? the top looks lighter than the body but not as lights as maple, can some one shed some light? rock and roll
crazytrain513
If you look at the sides around your guitar, if you can see a thin division (a 1/4" thickness or so) towards the top of the guitar (the front side) there is a maple cap on it. I hope that makes sense. It would help if you could tell us the year and model of your guitar?

bknow77
i' m going to take a picture of it so that you're able to tell better, there is a division on it and the wood is lighter but i thought too dark to be maple, if it were mahogany body and cap it would be just one piece? not the body with the cap glued on it? anyway its a 2007 les paul studio
Herco
Exact same make, model and year as my Studio... I wrote to Gibson asking for details and they sent me this..."The serial number 026970585 is consistent with a Les Paul Studio Faded model in Worn Cherry finish. Made on September 26th, 2007 Production Number: 285 Nashville, Tennessee USA Note your guitar would have a Mahogany top and Rosewood fingerboard" Hope this helps... Rabs
Yeah.. the LP faded models came in two flavours.. One with the normal Maple cap and one with a Mahongany cap.. Both are great guitars so its all good. And yes yours looks like it was the Mahogany top run.
Eracer_Team
Rab's I would have said Mahogany just like Herco and the BluesLPtone. a picture of the top would be good since mahogany has a completely different pattern to it than maple

btoth76
That's a great guitar! The earliest Customs had mahogany tops. Must sound like a dream with Burstsbuckers (if that's what it has). Cheers... Bence
beterpan
Does mahogany and maple topping create (significant) differences in sound?
Rabs
Does mahogany and maple topping create (significant) differences in sound? Maple cap will give a brighter snap.. Mahogany will be darker and a bit warmer. But your only talking small differences. Once you add distortion etc they become almost nothing.
