LP Studio 60s, LP Special JR or Melody Maker SPecial?

I'm thinking of buying a LP Studio 60s Tribute or a Melody Maker Special. Both have dual P90s. There's about a $100 difference between them. What kind of tonal differences should I expect from the maple cap top? Are there any other major differences I should be aware of? At this price, the LP only comes in ebony...

I'll eventually give the guitar to my son once he's old enough to play, so I'm leaning toward the Melody Maker since I'm guessing that it should be a couple of pounds lighter. Anyone know how much the MMs usually weigh?

I'm also thinking about the LP Junior Special with dual P-90s or Humbuckers...does anyone know how much these usually weigh? Are they about the same weight as the LP Studio 60s Tribute?

Thanks in advance.

I would go with the Melody Maker Special. But that's my opinion, and it's based on my experiece with Melody Makers, and in general the Weight. They're featherlight guitars. I've seen them average in at around 7 pounds. The thinner body gives them a little extra snap as well, so you won't miss that maple cap on the Tribute. And those P90's will give you all the growl you need.

Ryan, thanks for the reply. The 7 lbs for the Melody Maker is a little heavier than I expected. The Tributes seem to weigh between 7-8 lbs.

My original '64 is about 6.8, which is featherlight for me. I'm a pretty skinny guy too, so I know Light. It definitely feels lighter than the Tributes and slightly lighter than the Junior.

Thanks again for the help. I went in a different direction and ordered a LP Junior Special with dual P-90s.

Congratulations, Bluemax. I love my LP Junior Special (which now has a custom truss rod cover and pickguard that you can see on the Les Paul Special Club thread). I'd say it's medium-lightweight, much lighter than a LP and heavier than a Duo-Sonic or Mustang. I love its strong mid-rangy tone which gets dirty & growley pretty easily. [thumbup]

Ironically, I'm doing my homework on the Melody Maker Special...hi points and lo's...with the possibility of buying one.

Opinions, anyone?

Cheers,

Cheers,

Doug,

If you get the MM, get MF to apply their Holiday price match to Sam Ash's price. It should be $329 after the match.

Thanks for the good tip, Bluemax. [thumbup] But need some players' opinions before I pull the trigger.
