SG's and Rickenbackers

I have a Rickenbacker 330 and a Gibson SG. Ostensibly, they are very different guitars-- hollow body/single coil pickups vs. solid body/humbucking pickups. Yet, I hear a real similarity in their sound, especially when the Ric is overdriven (nothing is more snarly). Sure, the Gibson is more raucous and raw, while the Ric is more ethereal and chimey, but they seem to do the same things sonically, particularly as rhythm guitars in the bridge position.

Then it occurred to me that two of my favorite Ric uses (Pete Townshend (w/P-90's) and Jim Babjak of the Smithereens) use both guitars.

Has anyone heard the similarities between these guitars?

I don't find that they are similar in tone at all, but sonically they complement each other well. That is, if you use both of them on a track they contrast well with each other.
