An Elvis model Gibson J200 for sale at Gruhns Nashville and I was wondering if anyone had one and what they sounded like. (seeing as the man well let's say he could put style ahead of substance so is the geetar the same proportions of style?). It would have to be a certain kind of guitar player to own one of these, eh? http://www.gruhn.com/photo/AG6059.jpg or Gruhns site: http://www.gruhn.com/ BluesKing777. I own one of the Elvis D28 Martin with the leather cover. I find myself looking at it more than I play it.

rar
... I was wondering if anyone had one and what they sounded like. (seeing as the man well let's say he could put style ahead of substance so is the geetar the same proportions of style?) ... The original probably sounded just fine, so there's no reason why the repros wouldn't. It started off as a standard '56 J-200N. Elvis had Scotty Moore send it off to Gibson for refurbishing when he got out of the Army in '60 to be "refurbished". Scotty requested that the guitar be refinished, the fretboard replaced with one that had Elvis's name inlaid, and that the pickguard replaced with an original design that they (Gibson reps Gerry Woodworth and Clarence Havenga, the man responsible for the Southerner Jumbo) thought Elvis might like. This shouldn't have affected the tone significantly. (In particular, it probably sounded far better than the new 1960 J-200N Gibson provided him with for a recording session when the work on the '56 hadn't been completed in time.) The guitar is now on display in Graceland. BTW, there are plenty of pix of Elvis with an unmodified '56 J-200N after 1960. That guitar was property of the Paramount prop department, and was used in a number of films and publicity shots. It currently belongs to Albert Lee, who acquired it in '81. -- Bob R
jannusguy2
If it's possible to f*** up a J200, I think they did it with the Elvis models. I was no fan of the appearance of the Ron Wood models, either. Purely a matter of visual aesthetics for me. I'm hopeful they all sounded great. They tried to improve on perfection and, to my taste, they failed. I'm generally turned off by the idea of sig. models (especially with space age, pop art appoinments), anyway. I have but one. A J. Browne proto that I tend to think of more as a Roy Smeck reissue. Beyond that, not so much. I'll stick with the classic J200.

Yeah, I posted on this the other day, was immaculate till very recently, but wearing down quite a bit, I'm not worried though... I can live with that as wear & tear. looks like it's an 'authentic' problem :D :D

The film guitar goes to a player's player who could never be accused of putting style over substance. Proof that the showy 200s also sound good?
